Bruins Should Try Out New Interesting Line

The Boston Bruins have had an up-and-down start to the 2024-25 season, as their 2-2-0 record shows. Overall, the Bruins have shown good promise at times but also have some early red flags.

Their second line, for example, has struggled noticeably. Brad Marchand, Morgan Geekie, and Charlie Coyle all do not have a goal on the season. In addition, Marchand is the lone Bruin from the trio with at least one point, posting two assists in four games. With this, it is pretty safe to say that Bruins head coach Jim Montgomery should consider making a change with this group.

When looking at a potential switch for the second line, one that could make a lot of sense is replacing Geekie with Matthew Poitras. Geekie has struggled to adjust to the right-wing position, posting zero points and a minus-4 rating in four games. Meanwhile, Poitras was given reps at right wing during training camp and has been impactful early on this campaign. Thus, perhaps giving him a look in the top six could be worthwhile, especially when noting that he is a skilled offensive player.

Geekie also thrived last season in the third-line center role. In 76 games, he set career highs with 17 goals, 22 assists, and 39 points. Thus, reuniting him on a line with Trent Frederic and Justin Brazeau could help the 6-foot-3 forward regain his previous form.

Nevertheless, we will need to wait and see if the Bruins end up swapping Poitras and Geekie in their lineup. If the second line continues to stay quiet, it should be seriously considered.
