Bruins Superstar Gets Real After Ugly Sabres Loss

The Boston Bruins suffered an embarrassing 7-2 loss to the Buffalo Sabres on Jan. 28. With the Sabres at the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings, this was a winnable game for Boston, but they were blown out instead.

Defeating the Sabres would have allowed the Bruins to pass the Ottawa Senators again in the Atlantic Division standings. Thus, the Bruins threw away a golden opportunity in this matchup against Buffalo.

Following the game, Bruins captain Brad Marchand got real about the team needing to be better.

"Yeah, we’re obviously desperate right now, and we can’t afford to have games like this where we're not prepared," Marchand said. "We need every point, and they’re a better team than what their record shows."

Marchand also added:

"You can’t take that team lightly. They’re extremely skilled and [have] some of the most talented players in the league. So, you need to come prepared to play and ready to compete harder than that. They got a couple of saves at the right time where it could have been a little different game, but we still didn’t push hard enough."

Marchand is entirely correct in his statement. The Bruins are in a position where they can't afford to throw away games. The Bruins currently sit fourth in the Atlantic Division standings, with the Tampa Bay Lightning, Columbus Blue Jackets, Detroit Red Wings, and Montreal Canadiens all right behind them with games in hand.

It will be fascinating to see how the Bruins respond against the Winnipeg Jets on Jan. 30 from here. It will not be an easy game for the Original Six club, as Winnipeg is at the top of the Western Conference standings.
