Kyrie Irving to miss Nets' next 3 games due to 'family matter'

Kyrie Irving will miss the Brooklyn Nets’ next three games while dealing with a “family matter,” the team announced on Monday.

Irving will miss a three-game road trip for the Nets, where they will take on the Portland Trail Blazers, Utah Jazz and Detroit Pistons. It’s unclear specifically what Irving’s “family matter” is.

Irving has averaged a career-high 28.1 points, 5.7 assists and 4.8 rebounds in 31 games so far this season. He has missed 12 games this season, including four due to injury maintenance. Irving missed seven games in January due to “family and personal stuff,” and said that he “just needed a pause.” He violated the NBA’s health and safety protocol during that break, too, and was filmed at a party without a mask.

Landry Shamet out with ankle sprain

The Nets are also without Kevin Durant, who is still recovering from a hamstring strain he suffered more than a month ago, and Landry Shamet, who injured his ankle on Sunday in their 113-106 win against the Washington Wizards.

Shamet rolled his right ankle in the third quarter of Sunday’s game as he landed while shooting a 3-point shot from the top of the key. His right ankle rolled hard, which sent him spinning to the floor clearly in pain before he was helped off and into the locker room.

An MRI on Shamet’s ankle returned clean on Monday, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, though it’s still unclear how long he will be sidelined. Shamet has averaged 7.8 points and 1.8 rebounds per game this season, his first with the Nets.
