Broncos QB Russell Wilson reportedly had injection to relieve 'discomfort' in throwing shoulder

Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson reportedly had an injection to relieve pain near his throwing shoulder on Friday, just one day after turning in an ugly performance in a 12-9 loss to the Indianapolis Colts.

According to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport, Wilson received a platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection to help a strained latissimus dorsi, an injury he sustained in Week 4 against the Las Vegas Raiders. This is the same injury that Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott had in the 2021 preseason, and he didn't throw for four weeks.

However, Wilson apparently has no plans to stop throwing, because he will reportedly attempt to play through the injury. Pelissero and Rapoport also noted that a PRP injection isn't typically used to treat a strained latissimus dorsi, meaning it's not known if it will help. In fact, Wilson's entire treatment plan may be a gamble. Via NFL.com:

Wilson's hope, sources say, is that the injection — coupled with round-the-clock treatment from his personal medical team — will expedite the healing process. It's unclear, based on precedent and discussions with experts, whether the injection will improve his situation.

You can't really train an injury into healing, because rest is a valuable part of rehabilitation. Like he did last year, when he returned 2-4 weeks early from having his broken finger surgically repaired, he's trying to squeeze everything into an abbreviated timeline. Prescott didn't throw for four weeks when he had a strained latissimus dorsi, while Wilson will have until Monday Night Football in Week 6 — 11 days after the TNF game against the Colts — to heal.

Will it work? At this point, anything is possible. We'll probably find out at the exact same time the Broncos do: MNF against the Los Angeles Chargers on Oct. 17.
