British Open third round leaderboard, live updates: Billy Horschel takes solo lead after rainy Saturday at Royal Troon

Rain is moving into the area after scoring conditions were ideal in the morning in Scotland

The rain at Royal Troon on Saturday looked awful to play in, but Billy Horschel came out on top.

Horschel posted a 2-under 69 after he put on a short-game clinic on the back-9 to take the solo lead at the 54-hole mark of the British Open. He made save after save, and had one of the best rounds of the day as rain came pouring down late in Scotland.

That gave him a one-shot lead over the rest of the field after Daniel Brown stumbled at the 18th and carded a double bogey to drop back in the final group. Brown is one of six golfers tied in second at 3-under, so the Claret Jug is really anybody's to grab on Sunday. Top-ranked Scottie Scheffler is at 2-under, so he's absolutely in the mix, too, as is Shane Lowry — who briefly held a three-shot lead at one point on Sunday before stumbling down.

Horschel will go off in the final group on Sunday with Thriston Lawrence, who went 6-under earlier on Saturday to match the low round of the day.

  • Daniel Brown back in front

With a birdie at the 16th, his fifth of the day, Daniel Brown is back in the solo lead again. Incredible

  • Billy Horschel, again

Billy Horschel is saving everything today. He just went up-and-down, and nearly chipped in, after his ball plugged into a bunker at the 16th.

  • Scheffler's near ace

Scottie Scheffler just almost matched Si Woo Kim's hole-in-one at the 17th! What a shot.

  • It's not been getting any better, either.

  • What an incredible save from Billy Horschel to keep a share of the lead. He's tied with Brown at 5-under now as they approach the home stretch.

  • A two-shot swing for Daniel Brown

Daniel Brown is the solo leader once again after a wild two-shot swing at the 12th. Brown made his birdie putt, while Shane Lowry missed a very makeable par putt to drop back to 4-under.

    Leaderboard

    1. Brown (-6)

    2. Horschel (-5)

    T3. Lowry (-4)

    T3. Justin Rose

    T3. Xander Schauffele

  • Lowry bogeys, drops back with Horschel and Brown

That didn't last long. Shane Lowry, after a rough drive that hit a fan at the 11th, just bogeyed to drop back to 5-under.

He's now tied up with Billy Horschel and Daniel Brown again in the lead.

  • Lowry back in solo lead

Shane Lowry is alone at the top again after Daniel Brown and Billy Horschel each make a bogey. We'll see how long this last

  • Dustin Johnson from DEEP

This will have to go down as the putt of the day. Incredible

  • Backwards Hat Billy joins the leaders

Backwards Hat Billy is now a co-leader at the British Open. After his fourth birdie to close out his front nine, Horschel matched Lowry and Brown at 6-under.

  • Daniel Brown, co-leader

Shane Lowry just made a double at the par-3 8th after landing his drive in a bunker, which prompted a massive swing. Daniel Brown bogeyed, so the two are tied for the lead at 6-under.

Xander Schauffele and Billy Horschel are suddenly just a shot back. As for Lowry, well ...

  • Daniel Brown now 1 back

Just like that, Shane Lowry's lead is down to just a single shot. Daniel Brown carded back-to-back birdies even after his errant tee shot at the 7th to get to 7-under.

  • The most important thing you'll see all day

    Thank you, @ArtButSports.

  • Daniel Brown, just like us

Daniel Brown just nearly took out Dean Burmester at the Postage Stamp ... from the wrong hole.

  • Xander throwing darts

We came this close to another hole-in-one today at Royal Troon. Xander Schauffele just stuck one close for a birdie at the Postage Stamp to get to 4-under.

  • After a rough Friday afternoon weather-wise, several golfers took full advantage of briefly benign conditions at Royal Troon on Saturday morning.

    Then the rain hit again.

  • Lowry pushes his lead to 3

Shane Lowry's lead is growing after his first birdie of the day at the par-5 4th. He's up by 3 now early as the rain starts to come down hard at Royal Troon.

  • Brown steadies the ship after early bogey

Daniel Brown made a bogey on No. 1 after an errant tee shot, but has been able to battle back, with a birdie on 3 to get back to 5-under for the tournament and into sole possession of second place. He's looked totally unbothered by the moment 2+ rounds into his major championship debut.

  • Russell Henley's quality third round continues

6-under thru 12 on the day, Henley has charged up into second place, and his approach play has been excellent. Not everyone can hit an iron like this from the first cut ... the putt however? A gimmie in your regular weekend fourball

  • Justin Thomas heads to Sunday even for the tournament

Thomas is in with 4-under, 67 for Saturday's third round. He got off to a blistering start with six birdies on his first 12 holes. After bogeys on 13 and 15, he was able to steady the ship and come in with three straight pars. He's seven shots behind leader Shane Lowry heading into the final round.

  • Xander Schauffele on the move early on Saturday

More red numbers on the boar as the rain comes down ... 2-under for the day and 3-under for the championship for Xander Schauffele.

  • Shane Lowry finds the bunker off the tee on No. 1

With rain now falling as hard as it has all day, the leaders are off the first tee and at 7-under, Shane Lowry is at the top of the leaderboard, and also in a lefthand fairway bunker off the first tee. Lowry is looking to lift the Claret Jug for a second time.

  • Russell Henley with the SAUCE

Skip, skip, stop, zip. That's exactly how Russell Henley drew it up on at the Postage Stamp. He'd go on to make par and go out in 32. Henley is 2-under for the tournament and 4-under for the day at the turn. You'll also note that the rain has fully moved in and changing the conditions for the players at Royal Troon.

  • Scottie Scheffler tees off in Round 3

The two-time Masters champion is in the mix at the British Open and his round is underway. He enters the third round at 2-under, and five shots back of Shane Lowry. Scheffler, who's playing with LIV Golf's Dean Burmester today, has six wins in his 15 starts this season.

  • Justin Thomas slowing down after hot start

After going out in 31, Justin Thomas has come back down to earth some. 7 birdies in his first 12 holes had Thomas knocking on the door of the leaders, who are set to get their rounds started over the next half hour or so, but bogeys on 13 and 15 and an errant second shot on 16 have Thomas scrambling to stay connected to the leaders as his third round begins to draw to a close.

  • Thriston Lawrence star turn continuing on the inward 9

Lawrence has it to 7-under for the day and 4-under for the tournament, just three shots back of Shane Lowry. Rain is starting to fall and umbrellas are out among the fans at Royal Troon which could start to affect the players are the final groups begin to tee off.

  • Sam Burns is into red numbers for the tournament

The LSU Tiger birdied No. 8 to get to 4-under for the day and 1-under for the championship. The scoring conditions have been so much more favorable for the first part of the day, but rain is starting to move into the area at Royal Troon.

  • Sometimes you've got to flip the club and make something up

Robert MacIntyre plays left handed, but to avoid an nearly impossible stance out of a bunker late in his third round, he chose to flip his club around and give it a go right handed. He wound up missing wildly to the right...but making par from this position.

  • Another birdie for JT

The two-time PGA Championship winner has got it to 2-under for the championship after another birdie on 12, and is 6-under for the day. That 2022 PGA Championship is his last win on tour, and his best finish at an Open is T11 back in 2019.

  • Si Woo Kim makes a hole-in-one on No. 17

This is the 10th British Open played at Royal Troon, and until today, no player had made an ace on the par-3 17th. Well, that number has gone from zero to one with Si Woo Kim's hole-in-one in the third round. He's at 5 for the tournament and even par for the day after the shot he'll remember for a lifetime. Take a look:

  • DP World Tour star Thriston Lawrence is charging up the leaderboard as well

Among the low scorers in the early part of the day are names we've seen on Sundays at majors before ... Adam Scott, Justin Thomas, but also some less heralded names like Thriston Lawrence. The South African 4-time winner on the DP World Tour is 6-under through his first eight holes and up 24 spots on the leaderboard into 4th place.

  • Adam Scott pushing his way up the leaderboard

Adam Scott is thru 16 and up 41 spots on the leaderboard today to T13 at even par with an excellent round of 5-under going so far.

  • How's this for staying on balance, Cam Young

    Don't fall. Don't fall. Don't fall. Don't fall. Don't fall. Don't fall. Don't fall. Don't fall.

    Oh, good, a par

  • Justin Thomas' rollercoaster of a weekend summed up in one image

Have you ever had back-to-back rounds like this at your home course? Some days nothing works, and some days everything is cooking.

  • SungJae Im making big moves on Saturday

Have a day SungJae Im! A 5-under 65 has Im at 1-over for the championship and looking like he could be among the late tee times on Sunday if the conditions deteriorate on Saturday afternoon.

  • Weather at Royal Toon could be a factor as the day rolls on

The morning groups in Round 3 have dealt with much less wind than on Friday and scoring conditions have been much better — Justin Thomas is 4-under thru 7 — but that may not be the case all day, with rain and some heavy wind possible to affect the groups toward the end of the day, from about 4 p.m. local time/11 p.m. ET.

  • Tiger Woods misses the weekend

Tiger Woods missed the cut this week in Scotland, again, and calls for him to hang it up for good are growing rapidly.

Woods, Yahoo Sports' Jay Busbee wrote, "should still keep playing all of these tournaments as long as he damn well pleases." He's earned that.
