British Open Round 2 leaderboard, scores: Shane Lowry leads after second round as Daniel Brown, Justin Rose trail

Daniel Brown led after Round 1, and is the lowest-ranked golfer to lead a major championship after 18 holes since 2016

Shane Lowry is 36 holes into the 2024 British Open and eyeing a second Claret Jug.

Lowry, despite a double bogey on his back nine, finished with two birdies in his final three holes to card a 69 on Friday and get to 7-under. That was good for a two-shot lead over the field heading into Moving Day.

Daniel Brown, who entered the day as the overnight leader after coming out of nowhere on Thursday, held strong at 5-under. Justin Rose fired a bogey-free 68 on Friday, too, and matched Brown at 5-under. Rose hasn't won a major championship since his win at the U.S. Open in 2013. Lowry, Brown and Rose are all from Ireland or the United Kingdom, which is something that hasn't been seen at the top of the leaderboard at the midway point since 1951.

Billy Horschel, Dean Burmester and top-ranked Scottie Scheffler will enter Saturday tied in fourth at 2-under.

After their wild battle in North Carolina, neither Bryson DeChambeau nor Rory McIlroy started their week in Scotland well. Friday wasn't any better, either. McIlroy dropped to 11-over on the week, and DeChambeau finished at 9-over. They both missed the cut, too, which is something McIlroy hasn't done at the British Open since 2019.

Tiger Woods, like he has so many times in recent years, struggled again too. Woods posted an 8-over 79 on Thursday, and then a 6-over 77 on Friday which led to a seventh missed cut or withdrawal in his last 10 starts.

  • Wind batters afternoon wave on Friday

The wind in the afternoon wave at Royal Troon was awful.

"I need to lie down in a dark room. It's brutal out there," Matthew Southgate said. "That's one of the toughest experiences I've had on a golf course."

  • Well done, Tyrrell Hatton

    Honestly, respect.

  • Rory holes out from the bunker

Finally, Rory got something to go. He just holed out from a bunker for birdie at No. 14, which led to a great reaction. It won't matter (he's still 12-over on the week) but that's how golf works.

  • Joaquin Niemann's huge back nine

It can sometimes take just one wobble to cost you a shot at a major championship, but Joaquin Niemann is trying to shake one off to stay in contention. Thru 16, he's got six birdies on the day, which would usually mean a blistering streak up the leaderboard, but an 8 on the par-3 8th hole has tempered his rise. He does have four birdies on the back nine to steady the ship after the quintuple bogey. He sits at even par with two holes left, and seven shots back of leader Shane Lowry.

  • Jon Rahm making his way up the yellow leaderboard

Rahm had the incredible chip in for birdie on No. 9, and he's just picked up another shot with a birdie on 14. He's 1-over for the week, 8 shots off the pace, and 1-under on the day. There are just 10 players under par for the championship and with rain in the forecast for tomorrow, conditions could make for some wild swings throughout the leaderboard, so as the wind starts to die down in the evening in Scotland, players like Rahm who still have a chance to make a dent in Shane Lowry's lead will need to take advantage of the opportunities still on the course today.

  • DeChambeau in danger of missing the cut

At 8-over for the tournament thru 13, DeChambeau is still on the wrong side of the cutline, which is expected to be at +5 or +6. He won the U.S. Open last month and had top 10s at both the Masters and PGA Championship this year.

  • A rough day at the office indeed for Aguri Iwasaki

  • Despite missing the cut at Royal Troon, Tiger Woods is planning on being back for 2025 at Royal Portrush

  • Justin Rose's birdie on 18

This could be the moment that propels Rose to a second major championship. What a reaction.

  • Has anyone had a better week than Justin Rose?

Thirty-six holes. One bogey. Justin Rose is absolutely on fire, and after draining a bomb for birdie on 18, the 43-year-old Englishman is in for a 68 on the day and is 5-under for the tournament, tied for second. Remember, Rose had to go through qualification to get to the 2024 British Open and now he'll be in one of the final pairings on Saturday.

  • DeChambeau trying to remain on the right side of the cutline

It's been a grind for the U.S. Open champion, but this chip in could help him reach the weekend.

  • Jason Day in red numbers heading into the weekend

Jason Day got out early, before the winds really picked up, and he took advantage of the conditions that were a bit less windy in the early part of the day. He shot a bogey-free, 3-under 68 and sits at 1-under for the championship and six shots back of Shane Lowry. He'll have a late tee time on Moving Day as he looks for a second major title after his 2015 PGA Championship.

  • Jon Rahm holes out at the 9th

It's exactly how you draw up a birdie. Pull hook into the right rough and then top a rescue shot into the heavy stuff on the left side ... and then? Well, you read the headline, and they don't cut highlights for regular old shots. Jon Rahm is one of the best players in the world and this'll be one on his highlight reel for 2024. And at 2-over making the turn, the wind will now be at his back ... but will it fill his sails and give him some momentum heading toward the weekend?

  • Watch Justin Thomas chip in on No. 12

Justin Thomas has had an up and down tournament. He carded a 3-under 68 on Thursday, but Friday got off to an awful start, as he played the front nine at 7-over. The good news, as he navigates the back nine, is that he's at 4-over through 12, which is two shots clear of the projected cut line (and this chip in helped his cause of trying to be in the money by getting to the weekend).

  • Rose finally makes a bogey but stays connected to leaders

Justin Rose was probably never going to make it to Sunday evening without making a bogey, but he certainly gave it his best shot. It took 30 holes for Rose to eventually take a bogey on a hole — bogeying the 12th — but he remains just one of 10 players under par for the championship and is at 1-under overall for the day through 13. He's 4 shots back of the leader, Shane Lowry, who's done with his first 36 holes at 7-under.

  • Rory's rough Round 2 start

After playing himself out of contention on Thursday, Rory McIlroy likely needed to get under par for his second round to make the weekend, and through just four holes, it doesn't look like he'll be around for for rounds 3 and 4. After a couple of pars to start, McIlroy made bogey at No. 3 and triple bogey at No. 4 to sit at 11-over for the championship headed to the 5th tee. With the cutline projected to be at +6, it'll be a struggle for Rory.

  • This is just a microcosm of Robert MacIntyre's day

It's not just that the brutal wind is getting players off schedule, it's that the fescue is almost impossible when a player finds it.

  • Daniel Brown's stunning run continues

With a 1-over 72, Daniel Brown is firmly in contention after Round 2 of his first career major championship. After leading at the end of the first round at 6-under, he's now just 2 shots behind Shane Lowry at the end of his second round. A bogey-free run from No. 10 to No. 16 has the 29-year-old in a great position to make a run over the weekend.

  • Projected cut line now at +6

With just four playing groups yet to tee off, the projected cut line has continued to rise. It's sitting at +6 as of 11 a.m. ET, with several big stars already in the clubhouse on the wrong side of that number, including Rickie Fowler (+6) and Tiger Woods (+14)

  • Rory McIlroy is off at Royal Troon for his second round

Rory McIlroy will have a lot of work to do on Friday to make it to the weekend. After a first round 78 left him at 7-over heading ing into Round 2. With the projected cut line at +6, he'll likely have to get under par to make it to Moving Day.

  • Daniel Brown's steady back 9 continues

Sitting in second place as he gets into the teeth of his second nine, the first-round leader is holding steady at 5-under thru 15. His back 9 has been clean, opening with a birdie on 10, and then a run of five straight pars as he tries to get into the final pairing on moving day. Playing in his first British Open — and first major overall — the pressure doesn't seem to be affecting him down the stretch in Round 2.

  • Justin Rose posts two birdies early in his second round

Its been 11 years since the Englishman won his lone major championship, and Justin Rose is looking to add a Claret Jug to his trophy collection — one that also includes a FedEx Cup and Olympic gold medal — and he's certainly putting himself in position through his first round and a half at Royal Troon. Rose has still yet to make a bogey on the week, thru 8 on Friday, and collected this birdie on the 8th hole to get to 4-under for the championship and 2-under for the day.

  • Scheffler closes with bogey, heads to the weekend 5 shots back

The No. 1 player in the world is in the mix heading into the weekend at Royal Troon. Scottie Scheffler made bogey on 18 to head to Saturday's third round at 2-under, and five shots off the pace, set by Shane Lowry earlier in the day.

  • Shane Lowry finishes with brilliant birdie to get to -7

A birdie-par-birdie finish has 2019 British Open champion Shane Lowry eyeing the Claret Jug for a second time with a 2-under, 69 to wrap up Round 2. He overcame the double bogey at 11 to get to a solo lead by the end of his day. He's earned himself a late tee time on Saturday — a day that could see more wind and rain at Royal Troon.

  • Yahoo Sports' Jay Busbee with his take on Tiger's 2024 British Open

With Tiger Woods' 2024 major championship season over, whats next for the most beloved golfer of the past three decades? Retirement has been a subject of discussion surrounding the 15-time major champion, and with another disappointing performance at one of the sport's premier events, Jay Busbee weighs in on the Big Cat's future, and what could be next for the golf icon.

  • Tiger wraps up his Open Championship at 14-over

15 majors and 3 British Opens are seared into the collective consciousness of the golf world, and while the days of his competing at the top of the leaderboard seem to be long gone, the opportunity to have arguably the greatest player of all-time still a part of the major events is one that the golf world can still relish. Tiger Woods will miss the cut for a seventh time in his last 10 events — cut line is projected to be at 5-over — after 79-77 to finish at 14-over for the championship.

  • Scheffler within three of the lead after 14

He's the hottest player in the world, having won 6 of his last 10 starts, and now he's a 2-under thru 14 after making one of just a handful of birdies of the day at No. 14. That red number came at the end of a run of eight straight pars that have kept him in contention in the second round at Royal Troon.

  • Lowry steadies the ship

After a tough double bogey on 11, Lowry stays at the top of the leaderboard after rolling off three straight pars to stay at 5-under, where he's tied with Daniel Brown.

  • Tiger flashes vintage shot making skills

While he's having one of the roughest major championship performance of his career, the highlights we've been used to seeing for nearly three decades still pop up from time to time with Tiger Woods, including this masterful shot into the 15th green.

  • Shane Lowry falls back to the field

The magic ran out for Shane Lowry at Royal Troon's 11th on Friday. Holding a two-stroke lead, Lowry stepped up to the tee at the 11th ... and put his shot deep into the thick Scottish rough. He ended up having to take an unplayable lie, and then pitched up short of the green. One double-bogey putt later, and Lowry had fallen back into a tie with Daniel Brown at -5. He's still a co-leader at the Open, but with winds picking up and the toughest stretch of the course ahead, Lowry has work to do to bring it home.

And another past Open Champion calls it a week, early — John Daly, the 1995 Open Champion, has withdrawn from this year's tournament after one round, citing a knee injury. Daly and Ernie Els both shot +11 in the tournament's opening round.

  • Leaderboard update: Lowry leads again

A birdie on the 8th has given Shane Lowry the lead once again at the Open Championship. Everything is rolling Lowry's way right now, and with tricky weather on the way, this could be a highly relaxing Friday afternoon on the couch for Lowry.

    1. Shane Lowry, -7 (through 8)
    2. Daniel Brown, -6 (3)
    3. Justin Thomas, -3 (7:53 a.m. ET tee time)
    T4. Xander Schauffele + seven others, -2

  • Tiger Woods birdie!

Look, it's a little sad when we get excited about Tiger Woods just carding a birdie, but that's where we are now. Woods rolled in a long one at the par-5 6th to get all the way down to ... +10. Ah, well.

  • Rough day for Scottie Scheffler's caddie

Being sick at work is a tough go, and it's especially tough when your work involves hauling a heavy bag up and down the hills of Scotland. Ted Scott, Scottie Scheffler's caddie, is apparently battling something bad; he's been reported as laying down while Scheffler isn't actively swinging. And with Scheffler only through four holes as of 6:15 a.m. ET, there's a long way for Scott to go.

  • Ernie Els withdraws from Open with injury

Royal Troon is taking out the competitors at the 152nd Open, one at a time. Latest to withdraw: Ernie Els, the 2002 and 2012 Open champion. Els withdrew prior to the second round, citing a back injury.

On Thursday, the Big Easy shot +11, finishing second-to-last on the day. Els has three wins on the season as a member of the PGA Tour Champions, and at the moment is still listed in the field for next week's Senior British Open.

Els joins Romain Langasque, who withdrew Thursday after an awkward, 84-yard tee shot at the famed Postage Stamp.

  • Shane Lowry jumps into the lead right away

After just a single hole, Shane Lowry is back in a share of the lead. He just birdied the first to match Daniel Brown at 6-under.

  • Tiger drops 2 shots early

Well, Tiger Woods just made a double bogey at the second after he missed the fairway and then missed the green well right on his approach. He's down to 10-over now, several shots outside the early projected cutline. Not the best start.

  • Friday's weather forecast

It doesn't look like we'll get any rain today at Royal Troon.

  • Tiger Woods tees off in second round

Tiger Woods and his group have now teed off in the second round at Royal Troon. Woods posted an 8-over 79 on Thursday, and will need a huge round today in order to make the cut.

While this is a familiar trend for the golf legend, and there have been growing calls for him to hang it up, Woods pushed back on those earlier this week. Yahoo Sports' Jay Busbee wrote that, while Woods "in all likelihood will never win another tournament on the PGA Tour," he should still play "as long as he dam well pleases."

  • Marcel Siem making moves

That's 5 birdies and a bogey in the first nine holes of the day for Marcel Siem. He's climbed up to T4 now after his bogey on the par-4 9th.

  • Projected Cutline

Here's what the cut is looking like today at Royal Troon.

  • Marcel Siem has already jumped up 31 spots on the leaderboard today. The six time DP World Tour winner is at 1-under now for the week.

  • Friday at the British Open

We're back for the second round of the British Open at Royal Troon, and there's a relatively unknown golfer leading the pack. Daniel Brown, who entered the week at No. 273 in the OWGR, fired a 6-under 65 to overtake Shane Lowry and grab the solo lead. This is the 29-year-old Englishman's first ever major championship.

    Leaderboard Update:

    1. Daniel Brown (-6)

    2. Shane Lowry (-5)

    3. Justin Thomas (-3)

    T4. Xander Schauffele (-2)

    T4. Mackenzie Hughes

    T4. Alex Noren
