Brian Scott to retire from driving after 2016
Richard Petty Motorsports is looking for a replacement for Brian Scott.
Scott announced his retirement from the Cup Series in a team release Thursday morning. The driver said he made the decision to spend more time with his family.
“This was a difficult decision, but one that I made myself for my family,” Scott said in a statement. “Racing and specifically NASCAR has been and will always be in my heart, but right now, I want to turn all my attention to my family and to be able to spend more time with them. Racing has blessed me with great opportunities, and I’m very grateful for everything that it has allowed me to do, but for me, it’s time to move on. I can’t thank everyone enough who helped me in my career. I would not have made it to where I am at today without their trust and commitment.”
Scott is currently 32nd in the Sprint Cup standings with two races to go. He finished second at Talladega three races ago, the only top-five finish of his Sprint Cup Series career. Before jumping to the Cup Series full-time in 2016, Scott had run 17 races at NASCAR’s top level in three seasons.
In 208 career Xfinity races Scott has 77 top-10 finishes. He won two races in the Camping World Truck Series. Once in 2009 at Dover and in 2012 at Phoenix.
Scott came to Richard Petty Motorsports before the 2016 season as a replacement driver for Sam Hornish, who was with the team for a single season. Scott brought with him sponsorship from Albertson’s — a grocery store owned by his family — and Shore Lodge in McCall, Idaho. The resort is also owned by his family.
Not too long after Scott’s retirement announcement was released, Albertson’s said it would be ending its NASCAR sponsorship after the season.
