The Sharks are trading veteran defenseman Matt Benning and two draft picks, a conditional 2025 third-round pick and a 2026 sixth-round pick, to the Maple Leafs. The conditional 2025 third-round pick will be the higher of the two picks (Edmonton Oilers or Colorado Avalanche).
Liljegren and the Maple Leafs have made headlines as Toronto was reportedly looking to trade the former 2017 first-round pick.
Timothy Liljegren may be on the trade block.
Subject of a lot of consternation in TOR. Has always won his minutes handily in the regular season, including in a top four role last year. Always gets his minutes cut in the playoffs in favour of more physical D. pic.twitter.com/TMFE047ln4— JFresh (@JFreshHockey) October 11, 2024
The Swedish d-man has played in one game this season but set a career-high 20 assists last season. San Jose gets a young, smooth-skating right-handed defenseman.

Benning signed a four-year, $5 million contract in 2022. The Maple Leafs are acquiring a veteran defenseman who can help contribute as a depth piece for what the organization hopes is a long playoff run.
