Brazil struggling to live up to teams of old

Brazil manager Dorival Junior neglected to mention his own team when naming Argentina, Uruguay and Colombia as the best three international sides in South America and while he was clearly being respectful to their next opponents, the Selecao are not operating at the level which most football fans have come to expect from them.

They arrive at the final group game having failed to beat a Costa Rica team that Colombia dispatched 3-0 just four days later and being shut out in that game has put the pressure on Brazil.

Brazil were able to outperform Colombia in their respective match-ups with Paraguay, winning 4-1 in Las Vegas after Los Cafeteros had opened their group campaign with a 2-1 success over the same team.

It’s points that count, though, and Brazil’s slow start in front of goal has already put them on the back foot in their campaign to reach a third successive Copa America final.

In contrast, Colombia are in the best shape they have been for several years and have not lost since a defeat by Argentina in February 2022.

With the incentive to try to win back-to-back matches against Brazil for the first time in their history, Colombia are prime candidates to provide another insight into how strong the current Selecao really are.

Predicting the line-ups for this match is not easy as much depends on how wary the coaches are of fielding players who already have a yellow card and also on how motivated they are to want to win the group and avoid a likely clash with Uruguay in the quarter-finals.

Star striker Vinicius Junior is walking a disciplinary tightrope already for Brazil after he was cautioned against Paraguay while his Real Madrid colleague Eder Militao, left-back Wendell and West Ham’s Lucas Paqueta also have yellow cards.

Wendell took over from Guilherme Arana against Paraguay, when Savio was the other new face in the starting line-up, replacing Raphinha.

Colombia captain James Rodriguez was substituted with 18 minutes left against Costa Rica, but should be available, while Jefferson Lerma, Jhon Cordoba and Richard Rios are candidates to be rested if head coach Nestor Lorenzo is concerned about the yellow cards they are carrying.
