Brandon Prust on that time he got to hang out with Derek Jeter in Italy

There’s professional hockey player-famous, and then there’s Derek Jeter-famous.

Certain professional sports icons are just on a whole other level when it comes to name power, recognition, and rendering fellow pro athletes star-struck – and the former Yankees great is right up there with guys like Tom Brady and Michael Jordan at the top of that list.

Ex-NHL’er Brandon Prust discussed on the Jack & Soph Podcast his first encounter with one of his sporting idols in Italy.

“MP and I are in Italy and we just got engaged. I’d just proposed like the night before. We go over to Capri Island and were staying at the Capri Palace and I’m checking in and I look down and I see Derek Jeter and his wife walking towards us. I’m like ‘oh, babe,’ I’m like ‘there’s Derek Jeter,'” Prust said.

“I’m a Jays fan, but I’m the biggest Derek Jeter fan. We get around to the elevator and we meet right up at the elevator at the same time. I’m like ‘hey, Derek, I’m Brandon Prust, I play for the Rangers and, you know, I wrote an article for your Players’ Tribune. And he’s like ‘oh, yeah.”

Though he was an absolute single party legend in his time, everyone, apparently, develops new definitions of a fun night out as they stare down their 40s.

“He’s like ‘well we just checked in today so we’re going to be around for a couple days.’ And the next night I end up getting his number from a mutual friend. It was [Jeter’s] 41st birthday and we sat at the hotel bar. Just MP and I and his wife sat around and we played Heads Up for about two hours.”

Not really how one might expect a night in a hotel bar with Derek Jeter would go down, is it?
