Boys’ high school basketball rewind: No. 7 Chambers rallies to beat No. 12 Butler
After two close losses in a tournament on the North Carolina coast last week, Chambers High boys’ coach Brian Frasier was looking for a turnaround moment from his players.
Frasier got it in the fourth quarter of Friday’s non-conference game against Butler High, with the Cougars, ranked No. 7 in The Observer’s Sweet 16 poll, rallying from a double-digit deficit to beat the No. 12 Bulldogs 57-54.
Despite missing leading scorer and top 100 national recruit Markus Kerr (ankle), Chambers fought back from a 13-point deficit after three quarters to win.
Tarris Bouie III, another top 100 national recruit, scored 18 points, including a three-point play in the final minute that put the Cougars (3-3) in the lead for good, and Cameron Thompson added 10 points for Chambers, which last won on Nov. 26 against Myers Park.
“I told the guys, ‘We’ve been in these situations before,’” Frasier said. “We’ve played some tough teams prior to this game, and we’ve lost some. But we’ve also been in those games because we stayed the course and played hard.
“Despite our best scorer being down and not in the game tonight, we’ve been resilient because our past experience and how our preparation is every day.”
Terrance Badio put up a game-high 19 points, Eli Grier added 12 points and Caleb Milligan had 10 points for Butler (4-3), which has now lost three straight entering its Southwestern 4A conference opener Tuesday against Garinger.
“We knew it was going to be a dogfight, because they’re a heck of a team,” Bulldogs coach Patrick King said. “We knew they had been down in both games that they won, so we knew they’ve been making those second half runs. We knew what was coming, and we weren’t able to stop their momentum.”
After letting Chambers open the game with a seven-point run, Butler fought back to lead 13-9 after the first quarter, 28-18 at the halftime break and 45-32 after three quarters.
However, the Cougars caught their second wind in the fourth quarter, rallying to take their first lead since the opening period (50-48) on Zyon White’s 3-pointer from the corner with 3 minutes, 22 seconds left.
Butler’s Brycen Chander made a pair of free throws with 2:45 remaining to tie the game again at 50-all, and both teams missed opportunities over the next minute to take the lead.
The Bulldogs’ best chance came with less than a minute left, but Bouie swatted away an open layup by Grier, with Chambers getting the turnover.
Bouie then put the Cougars ahead with his three-point play, getting fouled as he made a layup with 40.6 seconds left, and following that with the free throw for a 53-50 lead.
The Bulldogs had a chance to tie the game when Milligan was fouled by Chambers’ Quentel Young while attempting a 3-pointer with 23.9 seconds left. He made the first free throw, but missed the second before making the third for a 53-52 Cougars lead.
Chambers then made 3 of 4 free throws for a 56-52 lead with 14.2 seconds left, with a Badio layup making it 56-54 with 8.8 seconds left.
Bouie then made a free throw with 4.8 seconds left for a three-point Cougars lead, and Milligan clanked a 3-pointer off the rim at the buzzer.
