(boys) BAM Classics, at Olympic (boys) and Jackson Day (girls), with the girls starting at 10 a.m. and the boys at 1 p.m. — The boys’ five-game slate opens with two of the best small schools in the Charlotte area, Sugar Creek Charter (8-2) and Langtree Charter (5-3), squaring off. The girls’ event has a six-game schedule, including Monroe (4-0) against Virginia’s Nansemond River (3-1).
(boys) Border Classic, at Independence, starts at 12:30 p.m. — One of the top games on this five-contest slate is Independence vs. Butler at 6:30 p.m., but the “Butler” in this case is not the Patriots’ neighborhood rival, but a team from Augusta, Georgia. Augusta’s Butler is led by junior Kwamane Bridges, who is averaging 20.4 points a game. Independence is 9-1, prior to Friday night’s game at Charlotte Catholic. The Butler from Matthews is also in this event, facing Nation Ford at 5 p.m.
(boys) Mike Gminski Classic, at Cox Mill High, starts at 11:30 a.m. — Day 2 of this event has a seven-game schedule, including several potentially attractive contests. Let’s focus on the next-to-last game of the night, with Weddington (7-2) and K.J. Younger (25.1 ppg) facing Davidson Day (9-8), led by North Carolina commit Isaiah Denis. Another game to watch: Concord Academy (14-1) vs. Caldwell Academy (10-5) at 4 p.m.
(girls) Y.C. Winborn Showcase, at Rock Hill High, starts at 11 a.m. — There are eight games on the Saturday schedule, including Marvin Ridge (7-1) against Riverside (7-1). Marvin Ridge has a young lineup, but the Mavericks are getting strong play from Kate Schindler, who had 14 points and eight rebounds Tuesday, and Jenny Briggs (13 points Tuesday). Riverside has three players averaging between 16 and 17 points a contest.
MONDAY
(boys) Mike Gminski Classic, at Cox Mill, starts at noon — There are six games on the final day of this event, and the most compelling is at 4:30 p.m., when Queens Grant Charter (9-4), coached by Joe Badgett, faces Carmel Christian (10-3), formerly coached by Badgett. Queens Grant has three players averaging in double figures, and two are freshmen.
