Boygenius Releases Touching, Charitable Cover of 'The Parting Glass' in Honor of Sinéad O'Connor: Listen

All proceeds from the tribute single will be donated to the youth outreach non-profit the Aisling Project

boygenius is paying tribute to Sinéad O'Connor.

On Friday, the trio featuring Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker released a cover of “The Parting Glass,” a traditional Irish and Scottish song made popular by the late Irish star. All proceeds from the release will be donated to the Aisling Project, a nonprofit committed to providing after-school intervention to youth in need in the Dublin area.

The “Not Strong Enough” band also teamed up with the Irish duo Ye Vagabonds for the cover. Together, they create a beguiling, heartwarming indie-folk cover to honor the singer-songwriter who died at age 56 in July.

Slowed down from O’Connor’s rendition lush with Celtic-sounding instrumentation, the cover is full of muted strings and gentle yet stunning vocal performances. Each member of the Grammy-nominated trio gets a moment to shine, while their Irish guests support them in harmonies.

“So fill to me the parting glass / And drink a health whate'er befalls / Then gently rise and softly call / Good night and joy be to you all,” the group repeats, as if sharing a sweet send-off to the “Nothing Compares 2 U” artist.

The indie group posted to Instagram to announce the release, sharing the cover art featuring a smiling photo of O’Connor and opening up in the caption about the project.

“‘The Parting Glass’ with @yevagabonds is out now,” they wrote.

The trio continued by sharing that O’Connor’s estate collaborated with them on the special charity release. boygenius continued, “As chosen by Sinéad O’Connor’s estate, proceeds will go to the @aisling_project, an after-school project working with children and young people growing up in a disadvantaged area in Dublin, Ireland.”

Bridgers, 29, also shared the single artwork on her individual Instagram and added a touching note. After teasing the release, she also dedicated the song to her father, who died earlier this year and with whom she had a complicated relationship. “For Sinéad, and my dad,” the “Motion Sickness” singer wrote.

The “Cool About It” band is among the many stars who have paid tribute to O’Connor since her death. Musicians who have shown their love for the singer/activist include fellow Irish icons U2, Pink, Brandi Carlile, Foo Fighters, Alanis Morissette and more.

Both the “Beautiful Day” band and touring mates Pink, 44, and Carlile, 42, took to the stage to perform her 1990 hit “Nothing Compares 2 U,” which was originally written and composed by Prince.

The Dave Grohl-fronted group and Morissette, 49, meanwhile, linked up at Japan's Fuji Rock Festival to sing a joint cover of O'Connor's 1987 single "Mandinka.”

One month after her death, O’Connor’s children Jake, Roisin and Yeshua, as well as her extended family, shared a statement in The Irish Times to express their gratitude for the outpouring of support they received.

“The children of Sinéad together with Sinéad’s extended family wish to thank the countless kind people who sympathised and offered condolences on Sinéad’s recent passing,” the statement read. “Their helpful support for the family is much appreciated.”

boygenius’ cover of “The Parting Glass” also comes as a part of Bridgers’ recurring, charitable holiday single series. The singer-songwriter launched the tradition in 2017 with a cover of the holiday classic “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.” Since then, she’s released covers of McCarthy Trenching’s “Christmas Song,” Simon & Garfunkel’s “7 O’Clock News/Silent Night,” Merle Haggard’s “If We Make It Thru December,” Tom Waits’ “Day After Tomorrow” and Handsome Family’s “So Much Wine.”
