Which bowl game is TCU football projected play in during the postseason?
It seemed like a fading possibility earlier in the season, but the Horned Frogs have turned things around and clinched bowl eligibility with Saturday’s 38-13 win over Oklahoma State.
While TCU is no longer in the race for the Big 12 title game, going bowl is still an achievement for this particular TCU team that looked like it was trending in the wrong direction just a month ago.
The Horned Frogs are off this week for their second bye week of the season before returning to action to face Arizona and Cincinnati in the final two games of the season. There’s still plenty to play for as each victory could move TCU up in the bowl pecking order.
With TCU enjoying its bye week, let’s take a look at where some of the projections have TCU playing in the postseason:
TCU Bowl projections
ESPN: Analysts Kyle Bonagura and Mark Schlabach don’t have TCU going far from home in their latest bowl projections. Schlabach has TCU staying in Fort Worth for the Armed Forces Bowl on Dec. 27 with a potential matchup against Army. Bonagura has TCU headed to play in Ford Stadium for the second time this season in Dallas in the First Responder Bowl against Memphis on Jan. 3.
This would allow an easy trip for TCU fans to support the Horned Frogs, but it also may be a bit underwhelming with no travel involved. These two bowls are the near the bottom of the pecking order for Big 12 schools.
Action Network: Longtime insider Brett McMurphy has TCU slated to face Vanderbilt in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl on Dec. 27 against Vanderbilt. The Commodores have had an impressive season with an upset win over Alabama and would be a fun matchup for TCU in Memphis.
Athlon Sports: Athlon also has TCU staying in D-FW with another projection for the Horned Frogs to land at the First Responder Bowl against UTSA. In-state matchups are always intriguing, but fans would likely hope for a game against a bigger brand. No offense Roadrunners.
CBSSports: Jerry Palm is known as one of the industry’s top bracketologists for college basketball, but Palm also dabbles in the football realm. Palm has TCU slated to land in Memphis for the Liberty Bowl against Vanderbilt as well.
SportingNews: SportingNews has TCU in the Texas Bowl in Houston against South Carolina on Dec. 31. This is the best combination of location, opponent and the visibility of the bowl game with the Texas Bowl being one of the league’s top bowl game slots.
247Sports: 247 has TCU making the short drive to Louisiana for the Independence Bowl in Shrevport where the Horned Frogs would match up with Army.
KSLSports: The Utah based media outlet projects TCU to land in Memphis for the Liberty Bowl against Arkansas. Another SEC matchup that has a chance to be high profile during bowl season.
Bowl projections will continue to be fluid over the final few weeks of the season and TCU can improve its standing with a strong close to the season.
