The first community padel courts in Stafford borough are to be created on a grass verge between two existing sports grounds.

Stafford Cricket and Hockey Club has been granted permission to build courts for the racquet sport, which is growing in popularity, on land at Riverway.

A lease for land that is currently part of Stafford Town FC's site is to be changed to enable the facility to go ahead.

Cabinet members heard the lease change would not have any cost implications for the authority.

Councillor Gillian Pardesi, cabinet member for leisure at Stafford Borough Council, described the proposals as a "win-win for everyone".

A report to the cabinet said: "The padel courts will be the first in the borough providing this type of community use.

"The land is a grass verge between the two clubs and is not currently used by Stafford Town FC."

Papers said the area of land was currently leased to the football club by the local authority, but the club had been approached and made aware of the proposal.

The report added: "Stafford Town FC, in partnership with the Football Foundation, are happy to relinquish their title to the land to allow the construction of padel courts by Stafford Cricket Club.

"Stafford Cricket Club have agreed to pay all the legal costs that will be incurred by Stafford Town FC, Football Foundation and Stafford Borough Council while working through this change."

The report said that once the land had been leased to the cricket club, the cricket club would take full responsibility for maintaining it.
