Boost for Manchester United as Barcelona director makes position clear on Viktor Gyokeres
Viktor Gyokeres is one of the most sought-after strikers in Europe, but Barcelona will not be prioritising a move for the Sporting CP star.
This is potentially great news for Manchester United.
The Reds have been heavily linked with the Swede and we also have the extra pull factor having hired Ruben Amorim as our new head coach.
Gyokeres, 26, has scored 23 goals in just 18 appearances, making him the most lethal striker in Europe this season. That explains why he is attracting interest from all around the continent.
Arsenal and Chelsea are reportedly interested in challenging United for Gyokeres’ signature in the summer. A gentleman’s agreement could see one of these clubs sign the Swede for less than his release clause.
However, Barcelona have categorically ruled themselves out of a move for the Sporting CP talisman.
“Gyokeres is a good player,” Barcelona’s sporting director Deco said recently, as per Mundo Deportivo.
“He has been scoring goals for some time in Portugal. We know him as we know others but it’s not a priority for us right now.
“When the time comes to make a decision and I have to make it because I am the one at the club, we will consider the options. But I don’t think it’s the right time to talk about any player.”
Viktor Gyokeres boost for United
The Sweden international is likely to move elsewhere in the summer, with the demand for a goalscorer bigger than ever.
Clubs other than Man City and Real Madrid are looking for their own answer to Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe but finding the next big thing remains a hard task as United have learned in recent transfer windows.
Rasmus Hojlund is still a work in progress, but serious questions have been asked of Joshua Zirkzee since he joined United in the summer.
A move to United is not out of the question for Gyokeres.
