Bonny the laidback pitbull has a loving personality. It’s easier to adopt her than ever

According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, the dog days of summer don’t start until July 3.

Given the number of homeless dogs at the San Luis Obispo County Animal Services shelter, it appears the dog days have arrived early.

To help adopters bring home a new four-legged family member — now through June 10 — adoption fees are $10 off for every month a dog’s been at the county animal shelter.

It’s surprising who has been overlooked.

Nox, an intelligent and handsome husky, and fetch-playing Jacko the German shepherd mix both qualify for $50 adoption fee discounts.

Then there’s gentle 7-year-old Bonny, who’s a loving pit bull with a laidback personality.

She’s won the hearts of shelter volunteers yet has been unadopted for six months.

To give Bonny a break from stressful kennel life, she’s currently in foster care.

Home life is heaven for Bonny. She loves being with people and lazing around the house.

She’s fine with the other dogs of the household, though yearns for a human touch.

She’s a star on the basics. She’s housebroken, knows furniture is for people and is uninterested in cats when on a walk, in addition to being an easy traveling companion in a car.

Currently there are 18 different breeds and mixes at our shelter.

Perhaps Bonny’s pitbull looks have caused adopters to pass her by.

Ultimately love isn’t about appearance or our expectations, but rather the heart of the dog.

How to adopt a pet

For more information about Bonny (ID No. 288469), call the volunteer line at the San Luis Obispo County Animal Services shelter at 805-781-4400, extension 6, or visit slocounty.ca.gov/aserv. The shelter is located at 865 Oklahoma Ave. off Highway 1 in San Luis Obispo.

The full-price adoption fee is $85 for cats and $130 for dogs, plus a $30 county license fee for dogs, if the adopters are San Luis Obispo County residents.

The adoption fee includes a new collar, a spay or neuter operation, basic vaccinations, a microchip and eligibility for a free veterinary check within San Luis Obispo County. Cats also are tested for feline leukemia virus (FeLV) and feline immunodeficiency virus, and adopters receive a carrier.
