Boise State releases depth chart (mostly) ahead of Saturday’s opener at Georgia Southern
Boise State released its first official depth chart of the season on Thursday afternoon ahead of the Broncos’ season opener at Georgia Southern on Saturday.
Since the quarterback decision was made a couple of weeks ago, the chart left little in the way of surprises, with many of the team’s expected starters finding their names bolded at the top of their respective positions. Some of those were junior running back Ashton Jeanty, redshirt junior tight end Matt Lauter and sixth-year safety Alexander Teubner.
If there’s anywhere on the chart that may spark some debate, it’s at kick returner. Redshirt senior wide receiver Latrell Caples is penned in as the primary returner, with Jeanty backing him up on kickoffs and redshirt senior wide receiver Cooper Jones on punts.
Both Caples and Jeanty had returning reps throughout fall camp, and everyone knows how dangerous Jeanty is with the ball in his hands. With the amount of touches he’s likely to get on offense, it probably isn’t too surprising that the shifty Caples will be the go-to guy on returns.
There are also some questions at wide receiver. Caples is the clear starter at what the Broncos call F receiver, but the other two spots have no clarity.
At X receiver, which is essentially a split end, the depth chart has an “or” between sophomore Prince Strachan and junior Chris Marshall. At Z receiver, Boise State has fifth-year senior Austin Bolt “or” Cam Camper, a transfer from Indiana.
Similar “or” denotations are listed on defense at nose tackle (Herbert Gums or Sheldon Newton) and nickel (Seyi Oladipo or Rodney Robinson).
