Boise State basketball goes cold at San Francisco, falls to 1-1 on season
After its blistering home opener, Boise State men’s basketball had a reality check on Saturday night, falling 84-73 at San Francisco.
The Broncos started the second half with a 20-9 run to erase a 36-30 halftime deficit, but the Dons (2-0) responded with a 16-0 scoring streak to retake control and cruise to the win. They did not let Boise State get closer than eight points and led by as many as 16 in the game’s final seven minutes.
The Broncos missed eight straight shots during that game-changing 16-0 run, part of a tough shooting night. They were just 24-of-60 from the field (40%) and 3-of-16 from 3-point range (18.8%).
Boise State (1-1) got 25 points from senior forward Tyson Degenhart, who was 8-for-10 from the free throw line. The next-nearest scorer was sophomore forward Andrew Meadow with 12 points, including 7-for-10 on free throws. He was just 2-for-8 from the field.
Point guard Alvaro Cardenas had 11 points and five assists for the Broncos, but shot just 3-for-11.
The matchup was the back half of a home-and-home series between the two teams. Boise State won 63-58 last season at ExtraMile Arena.
The Broncos, who opened the season with an 87-43 win over Oakland, will be back in action Tuesday night at home against NAIA opponent Corban, a school in Eugene, Oregon. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
