Blues: 3 Potential Free-Agent Destinations For Brandon Saad

The St. Louis Blues announced on Jan. 29 that forward Brandon Saad will be placed on unconditional waivers for the purpose of terminating his contract. This was after the veteran forward cleared regular waivers.

While teams did not claim Saad when he hit waivers, the reason for it was his $4.5 million cap hit until the end of 2025-26. However, now that he is hitting the free-agent market, plenty of clubs should be willing to sign him to a far more affordable deal, especially given his past success. Remember, he had 26 goals and 42 points just last season with the Blues.

Thus, let's look at three teams who could look to sign him now.

Colorado Avalanche

The Colorado Avalanche need more scoring depth, so they could consider reuniting with Saad. He played well for them during the 2020-21 season, posting 15 goals and 24 points in 44 games. Perhaps this could be enough for them to take a chance on him with a cheap deal.

When looking at the Avalanche's current lineup, Saad could give their third line a nice boost. In addition, if he regained his scoring touch, he could also work on their second power-play unit.

Boston Bruins

The Boston Bruins need help on offense if they hope to get back into the playoffs. With the club having limited cap space, perhaps they could take a gamble on Saad with an affordable deal.

The Bruins' depth on the wing is not strong, so Saad would have a real opportunity to play middle-six minutes if signed by Boston. In addition, Boston's power play has struggled this season, so Saad could give them another option to work with if signed.

Tampa Bay Lightning

The Tampa Bay Lightning's forward group could undoubtedly use a boost right now. Their stars are delivering, but they have not received the best offensive production from the bottom portion of their forward lines. Thus, a player like Saad could make sense for the Bolts.

When looking at a specific fit for Saad on the Lightning, he could even work on their second line with Anthony Cirelli and Brandon Hagel, replacing Conor Geekie. However, Saad would also be a possible option for Tampa Bay's third line if signed.
