Blue Jays' Vladimir Guerrero Jr. leads all players in All-Star Game voting so far

When you lead the majors in almost every offensive category at the age of 22, it's only fitting that you get some public recognition for your achievements.

That's the case with Toronto Blue Jays phenom Vladimir Guerrero Jr., who ranks first among all players in 2021 MLB All-Star Game voting after the first returns with a total of 857,956 votes.

Mike Trout is the next top vote-getter in the American League, but Guerrero Jr. still has almost a 100,000-vote lead on the perennial All-Star and MVP candidate. To add some more northern flavour, Blue Jays teammate Marcus Semien leads all AL second basemen in votes, as well.

Guerrero Jr. has more than earned his votes as he currently leads the AL in batting average (.344), and the majors in on-base percentage (.450), OPS (1.137), home runs (21) and RBIs (55).

The top three players from each position — and top nine outfielders — will earn a spot in the second phase and with a sizeable lead over Chicago White Sox first baseman Jose Abreu, it is almost guaranteed that Vlad will be heading to his first All-Star Game.

Guerrero Jr. appeared at the All-Star Game festivities in 2019, but only for a historic Home Run Derby that left jaws dropped.

The last time the Blue Jays had multiple players at the All-Star Game was back in 2016, when Josh Donaldson, Edwin Encarnacion, Marco Estrada, Aaron Sanchez, and Michael Saunders represented Toronto during that memorable season.

Atlanta Braves outfielder Ronald Acuna Jr. drew the most overall votes in the National League, with San Diego Padres shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. following closely behind. Three of the top four overall vote-getters MLB-wide are 23 years old or younger, highlighting the immense talent of the next generation of superstars.

Other notable position leaders are Los Angeles Angels two-way star Shohei Ohtani (DH), Chicago Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant, and San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey, with the latter two enjoying renaissance seasons at the plate.

The first phase of voting will be completed on June 24 and those still at the top will move on to the second phase, which will last until July 1, when the final rosters will be announced. The Midsummer Classic takes place on July 13 in Colorado.
