Blue Jays trade All-Star outfielder Teoscar Hernandez to Mariners

The Blue Jays have traded star outfielder Teoscar Hernandez to the Seattle Mariners.

According to the Seattle Times' Ryan Divish, the Mariners are sending reliever Erik Swanson and pitching prospect Adam Macko in return.

Hernandez hit 25 home runs and drove in 77 RBIs while slashing .267/.316/.491 in 131 games in 2022. The 30-year-old was selected to the 2021 American League All-Star team and went on to register career highs in home runs (32) and RBI (116).

He is set to become a free agent following the 2023 season.

Swanson owned a 3-2 record and a 1.68 ERA in 53.2 innings last season, notching 70 strikeouts and 10 walks. The 29-year-old registered a career-high 34 percent strikeout rate in 2022, giving Toronto's bullpen a much needed swing-and-miss threat.

Macko is Seattle's eighth ranked prospect. He carried a 0-2 record last year with a 3.99 ERA, while striking out 38 batters in High-A ball. The 21-year-old is born in Bratislava, Slovakia, but played high school baseball at Vauxhall Academy in Vauxhall, Alberta.
