Blue Jays starter Robbie Ray named American League Player of the Week

Robbie Ray's dominance will not go unnoticed.

The Toronto Blue Jays left-handed starter kicked off September on a high note, earning American League Player of the Week honours.

Over two starts last week, Ray allowed two runs and four walks while striking out 20 batters in 13.2 innings of work, en route to massive wins over the Baltimore Orioles and Oakland Athletics.

The 29-year-old leads all MLB pitchers in WAR, according to Baseball Reference, with a 6.8 mark. His 212 strikeouts on the season trail only Gerrit Cole and Zack Wheeler. Primarily a fastball-slider hurler, with the occasional curveball and changeup, Ray has posted a 2.60 ERA with a 0.99 WHIP this year, tossing 166 innings for the Blue Jays.

In August, he became the first Blue Jays left-hander to strike out 14 batters in one game.

In addition to putting him in the AL Cy Young conversation, Ray's stellar performance has helped Toronto regain some ground in the AL wild-card race. The club has now won five games in a row and sits three games back of a playoff spot.
