Blue Jackets' Top Priority Is To Get Olivier Signed Long-Term

Columbus Blue Jackets' GM Don Waddell was a guest on Jeff Marek's The Sheets podcast and revealed that one of the team’s top priorities is securing Mathieu Olivier with a long-term contract.

Olivier has been nothing short of outstanding this season for the Blue Jackets. In 44 games, he has tallied 10 goals and seven assists for 17 points.

He is also widely regarded as the toughest fighter in the NHL, pound for pound. So far this season, Olivier has been involved in 10 fights, including two in one game against the Boston Bruins.

If Olivier were to hit the open market, there would likely be significant interest from more than a dozen teams eager to acquire his services.

Waddell recognizes his value and is determined to keep him in Columbus for the foreseeable future.

Waddell had this to say about re-signing Olivier:

"We're in talks with his representation. You know, I've said publicly that that's number one priority on my list, to get him signed and locked up for years to come. He’s another guy that’s really stepped up in the locker room. I think it comes from, you know, maybe before he was only playing 8–10 minutes a night, and now he’s playing 15–17 minutes a night, taking on a bigger role in the team. He’s having a career year, scoring goals. But as you said, he makes our team better because of what he brings to the table. He’s an important piece that we’re hoping to get locked up for a long period of time."

The Blue Jackets would benefit immensely from keeping Olivier as a key part of their lineup while their young core develops. He not only provides 15–20 points while playing significant minutes but also adds much-needed protection for the team’s rising stars.
