Blue Devils seek elusive win over Seminoles: How to watch Duke football vs. Florida State

Duke’s Tre Freeman (12) reacts after making a game-winning interception in the closing minute of the Blue Devils’ 21-20 win over North Carolina on Saturday, Sept. 28, 2024, at Wallace Wade Stadium in Durham, N.C.

The last time Duke played a home football game, Manny Diaz and his Blue Devils ended a long losing streak to rival North Carolina and celebrated the achievement.

On Friday night, when Duke plays at Wallace Wade Stadium for the first time since that 21-20 comeback win to notch its first victory over the Tar Heels since 2018, the Blue Devils have a chance to collect another memorable milestone.

With Duke having never beaten Florida State in football, the Blue Devils and Seminoles face each other at 7 p.m. Friday.

It’s a chance, once again, for the suddenly solid Duke football program to shove aside another remnant of the program’s darker days, prior to 2008, when seasons with one or two wins were normal.

Now, Duke has gone 22-10 over the last two-and-a-half seasons and carries a 5-1 overall record, with a 1-1 ACC mark, into the game with Florida State.

But just like the team’s preparation for the UNC game on Sept. 28, the Blue Devils have to put in strong practice work to achieve something worth celebrating.

“The game just demands your full attention every week,” Diaz said. “You guys get to write the story about what hasn’t happened and whatever. And we do want to be a team that accomplishes things that have not been accomplished in a long time. But to do that, you’ve got to be able to do things that have not been done in a long time. Usually people think that happens on Friday night. That really happens in your preparation.”

Duke is favored to win because it has played well this season and the Seminoles (1-5, 1-4 ACC) have struggled. Florida State’s offense averages an ACC-worst 14.8 points per game and it now has second-string quarterback Brock Glenn starting after ineffective starter DJ Uiagalelei broke his finger in a 42-16 loss at SMU on Sept. 28.

Glenn played in a 29-13 loss at Clemson on Oct. 5, when he completed 23 of 41 passes for 228 yards with two touchdowns and one interception.

Meanwhile, Duke will count on its defense, which is No. 5 nationally in yards per play allowed (4.27) and No. 1 nationally in tackles for loss per game (9.67).

In the 22 games Duke and Florida State have played, the final margin has been lower that 18 points once. That was in 2017 when the Seminoles won 17-10 at Durham.

Last season, when Florida State won 38-20 in a battle of ranked teams at Tallahassee, Florida, the Blue Devils led 20-17 entering the fourth quarter before the Seminoles scored the game’s final three touchdowns.
