The first leg of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers Kickoff Run got underway in Portage La Prairie on Saturday.

Similar to the Olympic torch relay, volunteers and Bombers alumni will walk and run a football across most of southern Manitoba over the next week to commemorate the CFL team's regular-season opener in the new Investors Group Field on June 27.

The run will wrap up in Winnipeg on that day, where bearers of the football will pass by the sites of the Blue Bombers' former homes — Osborne Stadium and Canad Inns Stadium — before making their way to Investors Group Field.

The new 33,500-seat stadium is on the grounds of the University of Manitoba

Organizers say 300 runners will take part.
