Binnington Ties Blues Record For Wins In 3-2 Shootout Victory Over Sharks

ST. LOUIS -- Jordan Binnington has had plenty of big moments in his NHL career and won big games.

Winning Game 7 of a Stanley Cup Final ranks right up at the top, obviously, but for the St. Louis Blues goalie to pump his fist after thwarting William Eklund in a 3-2 shootout win on Thursday against the San Jose Sharks, the game had more meaning to Binnington that just tying the franchise record for wins.

"We were very strong tonight all the way through the game,"Binnington said. "I think we played a great team game. It's tough only getting two goals, I think we deserved a couple more, but we fought hard until the end. It's nice to win in kind of dramatic fashion like that on home ice. I think just get some momentum before this road trip.

"I felt good. Just raw emotion there to get the win. It's been a tough stretch of finding ways to win so we're going to take that win and it felt good."

Binnington did tie Mike Liut with his 151st win in his 296h game. And for Liut, who happens to be Binnington's agent, the two stand side by side now in Blues history.

"It's funny. He's been giving it to me to get this thing going before you kill the buzz," Binnington said. "I'm happy I'm up there with him and I'm proud to be up there. It's a big night for me.

"It's very cool. I think I'm proud in many ways and just being with this organization, one organization, in my career so far. Just getting wins, right? It's just a true testament to guys committed to winning is so important. There's so many different ways to win, right? Like tonight, we competed hard, the guys really made it easy right until the end. They really led the charge tonight. It's always different. That's the fun of the game for me personally as a goalie. I think we've just got to keep building as a group with where we're at."

Binnington gets a raw rap outside St. Louis boundaries throughout the league, but make no mistake about how guys feel about him in the locker room.

"It's awesome," said Blues forward Jake Neighbours, who scored the game-winner in the shootout. "We knew it was a matter of time. Such a legend in this city, a great goaltender, great teammate, great person. We're really happy for him. Looking forward to the next one and him beating it."

Binnington made 22 saves and was 3-for-3 in the shootout, making saves on Mikael Granlund, Macklin Celebrini and Eklund to end it.

"For a goalie that was drafted by this organization, to be here as long as he has and to do what he's done for this organization and tie that record of Mike's, it's special for the team, for the organization, for the player," Blues coach Drew Bannister said. "It's quite an accomplishment for what he's done here.

"I coached him when he was drafted to St. Louis. I had him in Owen Sound. I'm happy for him, all the guys are happy for him. Why wouldn't you be? He's a great teammate, he's a great pro. He deserves everything he gets.

"I know we've reflected on it previously. Just the person he's become and now he's a family ma with a wife and a baby. It's great to see 'Binner'. He's in a great spot professionally as a hockey player but as an individual."

It got dicey there for a moment when Alexander Wennberg nearly spoiled the fun by tying the game with 8.8 seconds left in regulation.

"That's where you get tested," Binnington said. "You're so close, eight seconds away from a 2-1 win and now you've got to battle it out in overtime and shootout. You've just got to dig in and find a way to come out on top. 'Jakey' came up big in the shootout there. That's what sports are about, right? Just finding a way to win and seeing that competitor come out in key moments."
