Bills bring in ex-Jags RB T.J. Yeldon on two-year deal

The Buffalo Bills have added yet another free agent.

The Bills have signed running back T.J. Yeldon to a two-year contract, the team announced on Monday. Yeldon, a second-round choice of the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2015, joins a backfield with veterans LeSean McCoy and Frank Gore, who also signed as a free agent. Terms of Yeldon’s deal have not been disclosed.

Over his four seasons in Jacksonville, Yeldon rushed for 1,872 yards and six touchdowns while making his mark as a reliable pass-catcher out of the backfield. The 25-year-old had at least 30 receptions in each of his pro seasons, including a career-high 55 for 487 yards and four scores last season. In all, he had 171 catches for 1,302 yards and six touchdowns during his time in Jacksonville.

Yeldon’s best season as a rusher was his rookie year. Despite missing four games due to injuries, Yeldon led the team with 740 yards. A few years later, he fell behind Leonard Fournette in the Jags’ running back pecking order. While Fournette was injured early last year, Yeldon had a significant role in the offense but fell out of favor as the season fizzled out to a 4-12 finish.

Yeldon’s time with the Jags ended on unfavorable terms with Tom Coughlin, the team’s executive VP of football operations, criticizing Yeldon and Fournette for appearing disinterested on the sideline during the season finale.

“I am disappointed in the behavior today from T.J. Yeldon and Leonard Fournette. They were disrespectful, selfish and their behavior was unbecoming to that of a professional football player,” Coughlin said.

Yeldon will get a fresh start in Buffalo as the latest in a slew of free-agent signings by the Bills. In addition to bringing in the 35-year-old Gore, the Bills also added wide receivers Cole Beasley and John Brown, tight end Tyler Kroft and linemen Spencer Long, Mitch Morse and Quinton Spain to the offense.
