Bill Belichick takes shot at Bears on 'The Pat McAfee Show'
The Chicago Bears were defeated by the Houston Texans, 19-13, on Sunday Night Football. They had a chance to win the game on their final drive but were unable to get the ball close to the end zone.
Over time, the hope is that the offense will develop into the powerhouse that they were designed to be with all of the weapons that were brought in. But for right now, it's pretty brutal.
Quarterback Caleb Williams deserves some criticism, but he is a rookie playing behind perhaps the worst offensive line in the NFL right now. If Chicago isn't the worst, they are in the team photo and they had an all-time bad performance in Houston. Williams was sacked seven times and the Texans defense totaled 36 pressures in a dominant effort.
With this comes criticism from the football world. On Monday, future Hall of Fame coach Bill Belichick went on "The Pat McAfee Show" to talk some football. The former grumpy coach turned media star had some things to say about the way that the Bears' roster is constructed.
"Chicago, just in terms of their overall team construction, the way that they decide to do it, you know, you look at a teams like Detroit in their division and Detroit has got three really good linemen with (Penei) Sewell, (Frank) Ragnow and (Taylor) Decker and those guys give, generally, Goff a lot of protection," Belichick said. "The Bears have really put their resources into, a lot of money and a lot of draft choices into, receivers but they've had problems on their offensive line and it doesn't really look like that's gotten much better...."

The former New England Patriots coach talked about how bad their offensive line was no matter what the defensive rush was for Houston. He also noted how hard it is to play quarterback with that type of offensive line play, especially in Chicago where it gets very cold in November, December, and January.
Belichick critiqued putting a lot of their receiving room without fixing the offensive line issue that has been plaguing them for a long time. He was sure to bring up the division rival Detroit Lions and how great their offensive line is for Jared Goff.
Nothing that Belichick said about the Bears during this segment is untrue. It is all fair to say about this team right now as they have one offensive touchdown through two games so far. They are lucky to be 1-1.
The problem now is that you can't just go to the store and buy a good offensive lineman. They are expensive and hard to come by out of nowhere. During practice, they need to find ways to get the guys that they do have to play better, and that falls on offensive line coach Chris Morgan.
"They had trouble with a four-man rush, five-man rush, just single blocks up there have been a problem for them," Belichick said. "You know, I like the receivers and I think the quarterback has got a chance but it's tough and I think it's going to get tougher."
Are the teams they will play going forward as good at the point of attack as the Texans or Tennessee Titans? Maybe not, but that doesn't mean that they are bad either. The Indianapolis Colts will present a challenge of their own in Week 3.
Belichick's opinion isn't the end all be all, but he has had some good offensive lines in his day. He isn't the only one who feels this way about Chicago's offense right now either. It can only get better from here, but it needs to turn around a lot and fast.
