Bill Belichick suggests renaming Super Bowl trophy to honor Tom Brady
Jan. 29 (UPI) -- Longtime New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick suggested that the Vince Lombardi Trophy, given annually to the Super Bowl-winning team, should be renamed after quarterback Tom Brady.
Belichick, who now coaches at the University of North Carolina, made the comment during an appearance on Sirius XM Radio. Brady played for Belichick for 20 years while with the Patriots. The duo teamed up for six Super Bowl titles before Brady left and won another with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Many football fans continue to weigh weather Belichick and Brady contributed more to their six titles, but the former Patriots coach often gives more credit to players for victories. Belichick cited Brady, Ty Law, Randy Moss and many other players who helped his teams win throughout his career.
"Players win games. You can't win games without good players," Belichick said. "I don't care who the coach is, it's impossible. You can't win without good players."
"They don't name it the Starr Trophy. They name it the Lombardi Trophy."
"Maybe they should name it the Brady Trophy."

Jim Gray, who hosted the Let's Go podcast episode, responded by saying they "don't call it the Starr Trophy, it's named the Lombardi Trophy," referencing former Green Bay Packers quarterback Bart Starr.
"Maybe they should name it the Brady Trophy," Belichick said. "He won seven of them."
If the Kansas City Chiefs continue their dominant run, quarterback Patrick Mahomes also could soon be in consideration for such an honor. Mahomes and the Chiefs will attempt to win their fourth title, and third-consecutive crown, when they meet the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX on Feb. 9 in New Orleans.
Veteran guard Joe Thuney, who was on the Chiefs roster for their last two title runs, also won two championships with the Patriots while protecting Tom Brady in 2017 and 2019.
