Manchester United have suffered a blow with one of their top targets close to signing a new contract.

The Red Devils are likely to reinforce the squad under new manager Ruben Amorim. He has reportedly asked the club for a ‘proper‘ signing for the left wing-back position.

The club have been linked with plenty of player over the last few weeks, but it was recently claimed that Alphonso Davies is considered the ‘dream solution‘ for Amorim’s formation.

However, United appear unlikely to sign him, with Bayern Munich close to agreeing fresh terms.

Davies’ contract expires next summer, but he has made significant concessions to prolong his stay. He is now more likely to commit to Bayern with a new long-term deal.

United suffer setback in pursuit of Davies

Diogo Dalot has been United’s main option in the left wing-back position under Amorim. Tyrell Malacia has fared decently in a couple of starts, but he is normally defensive-minded.

Luke Shaw is another choice for the manager, but he can’t get over his injury troubles. The Englishman is on the sidelines after suffering another muscle injury.

Amorim would ideally want a left-footed option for the role, and Davies would be perfect.

The £42 million-rated star operates as a left-back for Bayern but plays as a winger for Canada. He could easily adapt to the wing-back role, considering his balance between attack and defence.

The 24-year-old has been brilliant this season, with a 92 percent passing accuracy. He has won an average of 5.2 duels and 6.7 recoveries per league game, with 1.5 tackles and 1.6 take-ons.

Davies also has three assists for the Bavarian giants this term. He looks a perfect fit under Amorim, but United may have to look elsewhere as he is about to commit his future to Bayern.
