Biden administration to announce new border security plan before Title 42 lifts, Mayorkas says

The Biden administration will announce a new border security plan next week in anticipation of a surge of migrants in May, according to Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayoraks.

"I think next week we’ll have more to say about our preparation and some of the things we are going to be doing," Mayorkas told reporters Thursday.

The plans will come about two weeks before pandemic-era immigration restrictions, including Title 42, lift on May 11 and as Republicans in Congress continue to target President Joe Biden's handling of the border crisis.

What is Title 42?

Title 42, part of the Public Health Service Act of 1944, became widely known and used during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

Trump used it to turn away migrants in effort to stop the spread of the virus, but many Democrats and political analysts viewed it as a tool used by his administration to stop border crossings.

Human rights organizations have opposed the Title 42 policy, saying it allows the U.S. to illegally remove asylum seekers without due process.

Title 42 was lifted by a federal judge on Nov. 15 and reinstalled by the Supreme Court a month later.

The restriction will lift on May 11.

Biden could announce reelection bid before border surge

Border Patrol commissioner Troy Miller said Wednesday in a hearing border crossings could double once the restrictions lift to about 10,000 per day.

Some House and Senate Republicans for months have been calling for Mayorkas, one of Biden's Cabinet secretaries, to resign or be impeached for previous border crossings and child migrants who have been forced to work.

Mayorkas did not reveal details of the new border security plan, which will land the same week Biden is expected to announce his 2024 reelection bid.
