For Aston Villa and Glasgow Celtic the prospect of Champions League knock-out football is tantalisingly close as we head into the final round of the new look league fixtures.
At the time of writing, ahead of Tuesday night’s games, Villa sit ninth on 13 points and Celtic find themselves in 18th on 12 points. Both sides know they need other results to go their way if they are to secure a top eight finish and automatic qualification for the knockout stages, but it is the English Premier League side who are strong favourites to win on the night.
Sportsbook CopyBet has Unai Emery’s Villa side as 1/2 for victory with the draw on offer at 7/2 and a Celtic win considered the least likely outcome at 9/2. Villa have suffered just two defeats so far from their seven Champions League games so far this season, although it’s worth noting that the second of those came last time out against Monaco.
Interestingly enough, despite being a point and nine places worse off than their hosts, Celtic have lost fewer games in the competition than Aston Villa. The Scottish champions have only been beaten by Borussia Dortmund in Europe this season, although that was a crushing 7-1 defeat on matchday two.
Villa’s form has been a little inconsistent of late with just one win in their last four games in all competitions, but at home in Europe they have been very difficult opponents. Seeing off Bayern Munich back in October, Villa have also defeated Bologna at Villa Park and kept a third home clean sheet on the bounce in the competition when they drew 0-0 with Juventus.
An Aston Villa win to nil could be a popular bet at 17/10 with CopyBet, whilst Villa’s Colombian striker Jhon Durán will be well fancied in the first goalscorer market at 24/5, having netted three times already in the competition this season.
