Cristiano Ronaldo was the centre of attention on Monday night, as Portugal squeezed past Slovenia on penalties to book their spot in the EURO 2024 quarter-finals.

The Manchester United and Real Madrid legend looked at times every bit his age, understandably given he is 39 and at a sixth EUROs, and at other times, like someone 30 years younger as the tears flowed following his penalty miss in the first-half of extra time.

Everyone is well used to Ronaldo’s histrionics and emotional outbursts at this point, but this was something new and one that inevitably went viral across social media, with memes, gags and more coming in from all angles.

Here is some of the best bits from another “memorable” night in the career of Portugal’s greatest ever player, if not for the reasons he would have envisaged when he walked out onto the Frankfurt Arena turf.

The Portugal captain did dust himself down and wipe away the tears to slot home his side’s first penalty in the shootout, displaying the mental strength that he has long been associated with his powers.

However, Diogo Costa was the true hero, becoming the first keeper in EUROs history to save three penalties in a shootout.

CR7’s night was not just about spot kicks. He once again took control of all of Portugal’s free kicks, failing to really trouble Slovenian keeper Jan Oblak.

He has now scored just one of his 60 free kick efforts at major tournaments (a stunning strike to seal a hat-trick vs Spain at the 2018 World Cup nonetheless) and once again, X users did not miss their chance to rub that in.

Could it be that he actually meant to strike his free-kick over the bar, and was aiming for this cheeky fan in the stands?

The BBC were pretty savage with this new nickname for him.

Former Chelsea and England captain John Terry was not happy about that gag.

Fans of his side’s quarter-final opponents are already in a mocking mood ahead of Friday’s clash, which is probably not a good idea considering Ronaldo’s penchant for silencing his critics throughout his 20+ years in the game.

After all the tears, and subsequent laughs at his expenses, could Ronaldo have the last one and help lead his country to a second EUROs title?

Only a fool would rule it out, but whatever happens, he is bound to be the talk of the sport once again.
