The show’s sophomore season may have been a snowcapped misery tour for its characters, but Showtime’s pitch-black drama about cannibalistic teen survivors — and their adult trauma — did not cease to shock and entertain over the course of its nine-episode run this spring.
“Yellowjackets” executive producer and director Karyn Kusama will join actress Christina Ricci and music supervisor Nora Felder at IndieWire’s annual Consider This event for a panel, this Saturday, June 3 in Los Angeles. The series clinched seven Emmy nominations in 2022, and some of the show’s biggest champions (co-creators Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson, executive producer Jonathan Lisco, and stars Melanie Lynskey, Christina Ricci, Juliette Lewis, Tawny Cypress, and Ricci) made an appearance at IndieWire’s 2022 Consider This brunch.

Set in the winter of 1996/1997, this season finds the stranded teens battling debilitating temperatures and food shortages — the latter of which drives them to eat their own, first by accident and later by conscious, collective, catastrophic choice. Starvation is a ticking time bomb (and “wreaks havoc” on the mind), as is Shauna’s (Sophie Nélisse) late-stage pregnancy, which ends in tragedy.
In the present, the adult Yellowjackets reunite and face the darkness they may have brought back from the wilderness. Simone Kessell and Lauren Ambrose join the cast as adult Lottie and Van, respectively, diving into the ensemble alongside Lynskey, Lewis, Ricci, and Cypress. Elijah Wood also joined as the mysterious citizen detective Walter Tattersall, who as of the season finale proves to be a formidable ally (and possible romantic foil for Ricci’s Misty). The past catches up, whether it’s the ghosts of winters past or the dismembered body of Adam Martin (Peter Gadiot) that the women disposed of so recently.
“Yellowjackets” continues to be a tremendous showcase for its ensemble, saddling the actors with physical challenges, evocative monologues, and sporadic (merciful) comic relief. Picking the 10 best moments of the season — that’s “best” and not “most fun” or “heartwarming” or “relatable” or “joyous” — was not as agonizing as choosing which team member to eat to save Lottie (Courtney Eaton) after Shauna beat her bloody, but we hope to never face a choice like that anyway.
