Bellingham’s joke falls flat: England star at risk of UEFA punishment over controversial celebration
Real Madrid and England midfielder Jude Bellingham found himself at the centre of controversy despite his crucial equalising goal in England’s thrilling 2-1 victory over Slovakia.
Unfortunately, his celebration took an unfortunate turn when he made an obscene gesture towards the stands, which quickly became the focal point of attention.
As a prominent player, Bellingham’s actions were bound to attract scrutiny, and fans were quick to criticize him.
In response, the midfielder took to social media to clarify the situation, revealing that the gesture was actually an “inside joke” directed at a close friend.
“An inside joke gesture towards some close friends who were at the game. Nothing but respect for how that Slovakia team played tonight,” wrote the midfielder on his social media account.
Bellingham risking a ban
However, this explanation may not be enough to shield him from potential consequences. According to UEFA’s rules, any player making an “obscene gesture” or engaging in “offensive or insulting action” can be shown a red card.
As a result, Bellingham faces the risk of punishment from UEFA’s disciplinary body, which will review reports from the match referee and officials before making a decision.
Interestingly, this is not the first time Bellingham has faced disciplinary action this season. While playing for Real Madrid in March, he was sent off for arguing with referee Jesus Gil Manzano after a game-winning header was disallowed.
He subsequently received an additional two-match ban in La Liga due to his “contemptuous or disrespectful attitude towards a referee”.
This incident serves as a reminder that even the smallest actions can have significant consequences in the world of football.
Given his stature, Bellingham’s behaviour is under constant scrutiny, and he must be mindful of his actions on and off the pitch. Despite his impressive skills and contributions to his team, he must also adhere to the rules and regulations that govern the sport.
