Het Nieuwsblad are reporting that Beerschot have won the race to sign Jhon Espinoza. The Ecuadorian defender came to Belgium to negotiate a deal with interest from both Beerschot and Standard Liege. It may be a damning indictment of the situation at Standard and a worry to their fans to see a player pick a newly promoted side over one of the historically bigger clubs in Belgium. The 25-year-old is expected to sign a multi-year contract with Beerschot in the coming days.

Espinoza was available as a free agent after leaving Lugano this summer. In a year and a half with the Swiss side he played 64 times, scoring twice. Prior to that he had spells with Chicago Fire, Aucas and Deportivo Cuenca. The defender is also a full Ecuadorian international and should add some quality to Dirk Kuyt’s side. Espinoza can play as a right-back or further up the pitch as a right-midfielder if the side want to play with three at the back.
