Bears vs. Panthers: Stars of the game after Week 5 win
The Chicago Bears defeated the Carolina Panthers, 36-10, on Sunday at Soldier Field. It marked the team's second consecutive win and eighth straight at home.
The team that traded them DJ Moore, the pick used on Caleb Williams, and a lot more came to town looking to get a big win. With last year's No. 1 pick Bryce Young on the bench in favor of former Bears quarterback Andy Dalton, the Panthers made that trade and are in a terrible spot now because of it.
A lot of players on the Bears came ready for this game, where all phases did their part to pull out the victory. The defense did its job holding the Panthers to just 10 points, but one person didn’t completely dominate statistically. It was truly a group effort.
On offense, the story was a bit different. Three players went above and beyond. Of all those who stood out, these three stand out above the rest:
Third Star of the Game: RB Roschon Johnson
Stat line: 10 carries for 25 yards and two touchdowns
Running back Roschon Johnson didn’t get the ball 25 times and run it for 150-plus yards or anything like that, but he did something that not many have been able to say in a long time. Johnson scored two rushing touchdowns. When the Bears got to the goal line, they knew that they had a guy who could burst into the end zone using his power.
This was something that Shane Waldron’s offense was lacking early but it seems like they have realized that. D’Andre Swift also had a rushing touchdown in his second straight good game, but Johnson is the “pound-the-rock” back in short gain situations. If the Bears continue to use Johnson in this role, this won’t be the last time he’s considered for being a star of the game. Scoring twice with him is a big key to their huge victory.
Second Star of the Game: QB Caleb Williams
Stat line: 20-of-29, 304 yards, 2 touchdowns; 5 carries, 34 yards
We are seeing rookie Caleb Williams progress as an NFL quarterback right before our eyes. It was a struggle in the first two weeks, but the last three games he's shown great improvement. There is still a lot of work to be done, but he is well on his way to being a franchise quarterback. Williams showed an ability to make pretty throws in small windows. He also found his arm with the deep ball a couple of times in this game. It shows in his 300-yard performance.
Williams also continued his strong streak of not throwing interceptions. He knows how to protect the football, and it is helping with his development. Williams' two touchdown passes and five drives that led to a score all show that points will come when Williams is making his throws and not turning it over. There has been a drop off in opponent quality, but winning in the NFL is not easy no matter what. This is what he can do to create less competition when his teammates do their jobs as well.
First Star of the Game: WR DJ Moore
Stat line: 5 receptions, 105 yards, 2 touchdowns
The Bears got a star receiver from the Panthers in the form of DJ Moore. They paid him in the offseason and he showed why with his performance against his old team. Whether Moore was extra motivated or not, he was great in this one. Moore found the endzone against his old team twice. It had to feel good whether or not he would ever admit it. He has to be very happy to be away from the disaster that is the Panthers right now.
Whether it was big plays or being an "out" for Williams, Moore was there. This was his most productive game of the season. After some discourse about his body language over the first few weeks, it is clear that he is just obsessed with being a part of a good football team. Moore doesn't want to be a passenger either. Rome Odunze and Keenan Allen are both there for the Bears in the receiver room as well as Moore. Tight end Cole Kmet and running back D'Andre Swift are great receivers, as well, but we all know that Moore is the leader of the crew. It could be anyone on any given Sunday but Moore is the most common go-to guy. It was big for him to have this great performance.
The offense is only going to get better and it won't always be against bad teams either. This was a wonderful step in the right direction for a group working so hard to improve.
