Bears vs Packers: 3 reasons for optimism in season finale

The Chicago Bears regular season finale is here to the mercy of a disappointed team and angry fanbase, but the pride factor is still in play as they face the Green Bay Packers on Sunday. With the other three the NFC North preparing for the playoffs, the Bears are looking to end their 10-game losing streak in the final game of their season, and get at least one win in the division this season.

After sticking within striking distance in their first matchup against NFC North divisional opponents, the Bears have since been blown out by the Vikings and Lions, respectively. Looking to not suffer that same fate, against the rival Packers, the Bears have an opportunity to end their season on a high note in what would count as one of the biggest morale victories of the year.

Here are three big reasons for optimism as the Bears travel to Lambeau Field for a rivalry showdown in the final game of a disappointing 2024 regular season.

1. Packers may be cautious

With a wild-card berth secured, the Packers could opt to play it safe in the regular season finale in order to keep their main starters in a healthy position. There has been no indication that they will do so just yet, but they could opt to play their starters in the first half, although it might be contingent on how the game is playing out in real time. But if Chicago wants to put up a fight, they should continue to play their starters, even against their backups.

2. Caleb Williams against Green Bay's average passing defense

In their first matchup this season, Williams got the team within distance to attempt a game-winning field goal, but coaching malpractice and Green Bay's special teams would ultimately hold it down for a 20-19 victory. Throwing for 231 yards without a touchdown or turnover, Williams showed glimpses of his talent and potential. But in order for the Bears to have a chance in this one, he's going to have to find the end zone. The Packers rank 17th in passing defense heading into the regular season finale, and Chicago's offense surely could only get better after only putting up three points against the Seattle Seahawks in their Week 17 loss.

3. The streak has to end, right?

The season has been bad enough for the Bears, so maybe they can be spared some luck in the regular season finale. The offense has taken five steps back under interim head coach Thomas Brown, and the defense, even worse, has taken 10 steps back letting opponents do whatever they please. Players have still kept their passion and focus on defeating the Packers, based off the intense rivalry they share, but it's still the narrative in a lost season filled with disappointment, anger, and little success. On paper, the Bears have plenty of talent on the roster, and whether it be pride, or making the most of their final opportunity, there is plenty of reason to have hope coming into the finale.
