Bears vs. 49ers: Analyzing final injury report for Week 14
The Chicago Bears (4-8) released their final injury report ahead of Sunday's Week 14 game against the San Francisco 49ers (5-7), and there were some big updates.
The Bears have ruled out three players for Sunday's game against the 49ers, including running back Roschon Johnson, who remains in concussion protocol after suffering a concussion on Thanksgiving against the Detroit Lions. Guard Ryan Bates (concussion) and safety Elijah Hicks (ankle) remain sidelined again.
But there was good news. After not practicing Wednesday and Thursday, wide receiver DJ Moore (quad) and running back D'Andre Swift (quad) were limited participants on Friday, and they're officially questionable for Sunday. The hope is both of them will be able to suit up.
Here's a look at the Bears' final injury report heading into Thursday:
Out
OL Ryan Bates (concussion)
S Elijah Hicks (ankle)
RB Roschon Johnson (concussion)
The Bears have ruled out three players for Sunday, including running back Roschon Johnson, who suffered a concussion in last Thursday's game against the Lions. With Johnson out, Travis Homer is expected to see some extended reps behind starter D'Andre Swift. Guard Ryan Bates (concussion) and safety Elijah Hicks (ankle) are missing yet another game with their respective injuries, which means Jonathan Owens will get another start at safety while Chicago remains without interior offensive line depth.
Questionable
WR DJ Moore (quad)
RB D'Andre Swift (quad)
There was some concern about the statuses of receiver DJ Moore and D'Andre Swift, after they missed practice on Wednesday and Thursday with respective quad injuries. But there was reassuring news as both were limited participants on Friday and deemed questionable against the 49ers. Moore is optimistic that he'll play on Sunday. "I play through everything." Meanwhile, Swift is also trending toward playing, which is even more important with Johnson out with a concussion. Still, Homer is expected to see his fair share of reps this weekend.
Removed from injury report
WR Keenan Allen (ankle)
S Kevin Byard (shoulder)
C Coleman Shelton (knee)
RT Darnell Wright (knee)
Receiver Keenan Allen has been battling an ankle injury, which held him out of Wednesday's practice. But he's been a full participant on Thursday and Friday, and he's cleared to go against the 49ers. Safety Kevin Byard has been nursing a shoulder injury which held him to limited participation earlier this week before he was a full participant on Friday, and he's good to go. Meanwhile, on the offensive line, right tackle Darnell Wright and center Coleman Shelton are cleared to go as they've been dealing with respective knee injuries.
On injured reserve/PUP list
S Jaquan Brisker: The third-year safety suffered a concussion back in Week 5, and he's remained in concussion protocol ever since. The Bears finally placed Brisker on IR in Week 11 as he continues to recover, and the soonest he could return is Week 15 against the Vikings.
DT Andrew Billings: Chicago lost its run stuffer in Billings to a pectoral injury in Week 9 against the Cardinals. Billings had surgery and is likely done for the season.
CB Jaylon Jones: Jones suffered a shoulder injury in Week 9 against Arizona, and he was placed on injured reserve. He's eligible to return in Week 14 against the 49ers.
OL Bill Murray: Murray, who stepped in at left guard for the injured Teven Jenkins, suffered a pectoral muscle injury in a Week 8 loss to the Commanders. Given the type of injury, it's likely this could be a season-ending injury for Murray.
LS Patrick Scales: Scales underwent back surgery last month to fix a disc issue, which landed him on IR to start the season. He'll miss at least the first four games of the season, and he's eligible to return in Week 5 against the Panthers. With Scales sidelined, it'll be local product Scott Daly getting the nod at long snapper.
TE Stephen Carlson: Carlson suffered a collarbone injury in practice ahead of Week 4, which landed him on IR. He'll have to miss at least the next four games, which makes him eligible for a Week 9 return when Chicago battles the Cardinals.
WR Nsimba Webster: Webster suffered a groin injury in the preseason finale against the Chiefs after an impressive first quarter of action. He was placed on IR (with no designation to return), which officially ends his 2024 season.
RB Ian Wheeler: Wheeler, the "Hard Knocks" fan favorite, suffered a torn ACL in the preseason finale against Kansas City. While the undrafted rookie be able to rehab at the facility when he's ready, his promising season is over before it even started.
