Bears TE Marcedes Lewis sounds off on Matt Eberflus firing
With the firing of Matt Eberflus finally passing, Chicago Bears players are starting to speak out about what led to their former coach's dismissal. On his YouTube podcast, "The Big Dog Show," tight end Marcedes Lewis was asked by host David Kaplan about the events surrounding Eberflus' firing and his reaction to it all.
Getting right to the point and not holding back any words, Lewis said he would be lying if he said he was shocked by the firing. Following a sixth straight loss in an embarrassing display of coaching malpractice against the Detroit Lions on Thanksgiving, the writing was on the wall for Eberflus, which was no surprise for Lewis.
"I'm not surprised, to say I'm surprised, it wouldn't be honest," Lewis said. "I felt like there were numerous situations that could've led up to the final letting go of Flus."
Reflecting back on the start of the season, Lewis said it still comes as a shock to have a coach fired, especially when the expectation was to finish the year with the coach you started with.
"When you come into the season with a head coach, you think for at least that season, he's going to be there," Lewis said. "Mentally, you're set knowing this is our head coach."
Not one to shy away from his thoughts or hold back his words, Lewis said the NFL is a production-based business so he understood why the move was made.
"You hate to see it happen, but at the end of the day it's a production-based business," Lewis said. "As far as I feel emotionally about it, we got five games left that we would love to win, all of them, and they're all very winnable."
Emphasizing that it was late-game situations which cost them several football games, Lewis pondered on the "what if" side of things, which could've seen their current record of 4-8, be flipped to 8-4, had things gone differently.
Now that Eberflus is gone, things are coming to light with Bears players letting it be known what went wrong, what made them most angry, and how they plan to move forward.
