Bears TE Cole Kmet showed why he should be more involved on offense

The Chicago Bears offense once again struggled in Sunday's loss to the Indianapolis Colts. It wasn't one of those losses that a young team can feel good about. There were a lot of poor coaching decisions and problems with the execution once again.

One of the things that was critiqued through the first two weeks was the usage of tight end Cole Kmet, who was the second leading receiver on the team in 2023. Kmet is arguably one of the 10 best in the NFL at his position right now, yet he wasn't being used right in the first two games of the season. Whether it's as a receiver or a blocker, he's great and should be on the field a lot.

Every week, Pro Football Focus releases their grades for every player. Despite another rough showing, there were still some standout Bears players who earned high marks. That includes Kmet, who graded out as the best player for Chicago in Week 3.

Kmet earned an 86.0 grade, which ranked ahead of safety Kevin Byard (83.5), running back Roschon Johnson (75.1), right tackle Darnell Wright (69.6) and left tackle Braxton Jones (69.6) to round out the top five.

This is what the Bears need to see from Kmet all season long. It's on him but also the team to make sure he is productive. He can be a great asset to rookie quarterback Caleb Williams as he learns to be a star in the league. Good tight ends are incredibly important to young quarterbacks trying to grow.

In Sunday's loss, Kmet tied for a team-high 10 catches for 97 yards and a touchdown. They didn't get his best blocking performance but they also didn't match up well on the offensive line when that was his role. Still, you can see how impactful he is when he's used more.

Going forward, this is the Kmet that the Bears are looking to see on the offensive side of the ball. If the offense is going to take steps forward, he must be a big part of the transformation.
