Bears request to interview Kliff Kingsbury for head coach
If you thought the Chicago Bears already had enough candidates for their head coaching vacancy, you would be mistaken. The Bears reportedly added another name to their coaching list when they put in a request to interview Washington Commanders offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury, according to NFL insider Josina Anderson. Kingsbury has been instrumental in the development of rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels and the success of the Commanders offense.
Update: From gathering input, to expressing interest, to submission of official requests.
I’m told the #Saints and the #Bears are the two teams that have officially requested interviews with #Commanders OC Kliff Kingsbury, per league source. @BovadaOfficial https://t.co/7ChqTQcTLW— JosinaAnderson (@JosinaAnderson) January 8, 2025
This will be the second time the Bears have met with Kingsbury within the last 12 months. The former Arizona Cardinals head coach was a candidate to be their offensive coordinator last offseason before the job went to Shane Waldron. Kingsbury had experience in college and the pros and worked with quarterback Caleb Williams as an assistant at USC during the 2023 season.
When he was passed over for the job, Kingsbury became Washington's offensive coordinator and turned them into a top-five scoring unit. Kingsbury's work with Daniels stands out the most among his accomplishments in 2024, but the Commanders also had a top rushing attack. He developed an offense that Daniels and the skill players thrived in and helped lead them to a 12-5 record with a playoff berth. Previously, Kingsbury was the head coach for the Cardinals from 2019-2022 and the Texas Tech Raiders from 2013-2018.
Kingsbury joins a list of candidates that includes Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver, Arizona Cardinals offensive coordinator Drew Petzing, New York Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka, Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores, Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith, Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy, Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken, former Stanford head coach David Shaw, former Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Vrabel, former Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll, and Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Joe Brady. General manager Ryan Poles also confirmed Bears interim head coach Thomas Brown will get a formal interview for the permanent role.
