Bears PFF grades: Best and worst performers from Week 5 win vs. Panthers

The Chicago Bears (3-2) defeated the Carolina Panthers (1-4), 36-10, in a blowout win in Week 5. The offense and defense were both dominant in a game that was very much over at halftime. Rookie quarterback Caleb Williams had his best outing as a pro, receiver DJ Moore reminded the Panthers what they've been missing and the defense made an impression with four sacks and three takeaways.

Pro Football Focus has handed out player grades for those who took a snap in Chicago’s win against Carolina, and we broke them down by offense and defense, analyzing the three highest- and lowest-graded players on each side, as well as some other notable performers.

There were a few surprises — and then some not surprises — in terms of the highest- and lowest-graded players, both on offense and defense. Here’s a look:

Top 3 offense

  • LG Teven Jenkins - 84.5

  • LG Bill Murray - 83.9

  • LT Braxton Jones - 73.5

The Bears offensive line has been among the worst in the league this season, but they had their best outing in Week 5's victory, as evidenced by the team's highest-graded players being offensive linemen. Jenkins led the way (84.5), where he played 37 snaps before exiting with an ankle injury. He earned high marks in pass blocking (82.8) and run blocking (78.8). Jenkins' replacement, Murray, was right behind him (83.9). In 37 snaps, Murray earned high marks in pass blocking (85.7) and run blocking (79.2). Meanwhile, Jones bounced back after some rough outings to round out the top three. He excelled in pass protection (83.4) and was solid in run blocking (64.6).

Bottom 3 offense

  • OL Doug Kramer - 44.3

  • WR Keenan Allen - 56.0

  • TE Gerald Everett - 59.1

Kramer had a costly clipping penalty that negated a Caleb Williams 1-yard touchdown run -- and forced the Bears to settle for a field goal. But, overall, he's been key for Chicago's offense to punch in those Roschon Johnson or D'Andre Swift touchdown runs from the goal line. Kramer earned a dismal pass blocking grade (11.5) but fared better in run blocking (48.7). Allen had three catches for 33 yards on six targets. But he was marked down in passing (56.5) and run blocking (53.0). Everett, who had two catches for 22 yards, earned so-so marks in passing (59.2) and run blocking (58.1).

Top 3 defense

  • CB Jaylon Jones - 92.0

  • S Kevin Byard - 91.7

  • LB Tremaine Edmunds - 85.4

Jones, who played nine snaps, was the Bears' highest-graded defender earning an impressive mark in coverage (91.6). But Byard, who played every snap, wasn't far behind with a solid 91.7 grade. He tied for a team-high six tackles, including one tackle for loss, as well as an impressive interception of Andy Dalton. Byard earned high marks in coverage (90.2) and tackling (84.1), and he was solid in run defense (63.8). Meanwhile, Edmunds rounded out the top three on defense. Edmunds, who also tied for a team-high six tackles, excelled in coverage (87.6), tackling (78.4) and run defense (63.9) but was so-so in pass rush (52.0).

Bottom 3 defense

  • LB Jack Sanborn - 42.2

  • CB Josh Blackwell - 47.7

  • DE Daniel Hardy - 53.7

Sanborn, who played 15 snaps, was the lowest-grade defensive player for the Bears. He totaled four tackles and excelled against the run (73.7) and solid in pass rush (59.4). But he struggled in coverage (29.9) and tackling (35.2). Blackwell, who saw nine reps in relief of the starters, had two tackles. He earned high marks in tackling (79.4) and pass rush (74.6) but struggled in coverage (38.4). Hardy also saw four reps after the starters were pulled, but he didn't register any tackles. He earned a 54.1 pass rush grade.

Other notables

  • QB Caleb Williams - 72.0

  • WR DJ Moore - 69.6

  • DT Gervon Dexter - 73.7

  • DT Andrew Billings - 71.1

Williams had his best game in his young career, where he competed 20-of-29 passes for 304 yards with two touchdowns and no turnovers and a 126.1 passer rating. He added five carries for 34 yards. Williams has now recorded two games with 300-plus passing yards this season -- and in just five games. He earned high marks in passing (66.6) and running (74.2). Williams' chemistry with Moore finally clicked as the pair connected for a pair of touchdowns. Moore led the team with 105 yards on five catches, and he excelled in the passing game with a 71.7 mark. But he did struggle as a run blocker (41.9).

The Bears defensive line is quietly becoming a dominant unit, led by interior linemen Dexter and Billings. Dexter totaled two tackles, one sack, four QB hits and recovered a fumble, and he now has four sacks in five games. He earned solid marks in pass rush (64.5), run defense (61.9) and coverage (60.1), but he was marked down in tackling (30.0). Meanwhile, Billings totaled two tackles, including one tackle for loss, one sack and one QB hit in the win. He had solid marks in pass rush (73.8) and tackling (66.8) and so-so marks in run defense (61.5) and coverage (59.9).
