Bears OC Shane Waldron explains what he can do to help Caleb Williams

The Chicago Bears offense has struggled through the first two weeks of the 2024 season, where they've totaled just 353 yards and scored just one touchdown. And it's been an especially rough start for rookie quarterback Caleb Williams, who has yet to throw a touchdown and has been sacked nine times behind a turnstile offensive line.

Bears offensive coordinator Shane Waldron has come under fire, and rightfully so, for his part in the offense's struggles. On Thursday, Waldron was asked what he can do to better help Williams behind a shaky offensive line.

"Having good variety, having a good mix of what we're asking him to do in different known passing situations right there," Waldron said. "Obviously, having the run game come to life in some of those scenarios as well and really being able to mix and match and play with some variety. I think all of that will (be) what are the breather plays throughout the plan, what are the chances for the ball-out plays, which I think he did a really good job this past week, you know, in all of the underneath completions, finding completions, playing clean and then when the big-play opportunities happen, like we talked about earlier, then they come naturally throughout the course of the game."

One of the most frustrating things on offense, outside of the poor pass protection, has been the nonexistent run game. After being a top-two rushing attack the previous two seasons, Chicago is one of the worst in the league through two games.

The Bears have totaled just 155 rushing yards and one touchdown through two games, where lead back D'Andre Swift has failed to eclipse more than 30 yards in any game. In fact, Williams was the team's leading rusher in Week 2's loss to the Houston Texans with five carries for 44 yards.

When it comes to helping Williams after what's been a brutal two-game stretch, that starts with getting the run game going, which Chicago has a good chance to do against the NFL's worst run defense in the Indianapolis Colts, who are allowing 237 rushing yards per game.
