Bears to interview Drew Petzing for head coach on Wednesday night

The Chicago Bears are in the middle of their head coach search, where they've cast a wide net that's included 14 candidates. They've requested interviews ranging from former head coaches to rising coordinators as they look for their new leader.

According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, the Bears will interview Arizona Cardinals offensive coordinator Drew Petzing for their head coach job on Wednesday night. It will be Petzing's first interview for a head coaching role.

Petzing started as an assistant wide receivers coach with the Minnesota Vikings (2016-17) and assistant quarterbacks coach (2018) before being promoted to wide receivers coach in 2019, where he overlapped with Bears president Kevin Warren during his time in Minnesota. Petzing then joined the Cleveland Browns as a tight ends coach (2020-21) and quarterbacks coach (2022) before landing the offensive coordinator job with the Cardinals in 2023.

Petzing is a two-year offensive coordinator with limited experience amid his first coaching cycle, but he has the offensive background that could make him an intriguing option as the team looks to develop quarterback Caleb Williams.

The Bears have requested interviews with 14 candidates, which includes assistant coaches, a current head coach, and former head coaches: Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver, Petzing, New York Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka, Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator Mike Flores, Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith, Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy, Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken, former Stanford head coach David Shaw, Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Joe Brady, former Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Vrabel and former Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll. General manager Ryan Poles also confirmed Bears interim head coach Thomas Brown will get a formal interview for the permanent role.
