Bears HC Matt Eberflus explains Nate Davis, Ryan Bates rotation at right guard vs. Titans
The Chicago Bears offense struggled mightily in their season opener against the Tennessee Titans, but Chicago's defense and special teams did enough to lift the team to victory.
One of the biggest concerns on offense was the performance of the offensive line, which was manhandled by Tennessee's dominant defensive front. Rookie quarterback Caleb Williams was never able to get in to a rhythm, and the offensive line's struggles in pass protection played a part.
Something that was noticeable along the interior was an apparent rotation at right guard with Nate Davis, who got the start, and Ryan Bates, who just returned from injury. After the game, coach Matt Eberflus said it was the plan to rotate Davis and Bates at right guard in the opener.
"That was the plan," Eberflus said after the game. "Both guys were dealing with health issues during training camp. We wanted to make sure they could finish the game. So we were going two and two there."
Unfortunately, it didn't appear to help the overall performance of the offensive line, which was outmatched by the Titans defensive front and couldn't give Williams a clean pocket to throw. It's certainly a concern coming out of Week 1, especially as the offensive line's ability to protect Williams will be key in his rookie development.
With that said, Eberflus didn't give any indication as to what the offensive line will look like next Sunday night against the Houston Texans. Whether that means Davis or Bates will be at right guard, or perhaps a change at center with Coleman Shelton and Bates, remains to be seen.
