Bears HC Matt Eberflus discusses Caleb Williams' ability on the move

Coming out of college, Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams was seen as a quarterback who can change games in more ways than one. He could make big throws, make something out of nothing by scrambling, and use his high football IQ to create offense for his teammates.

One of his two best plays in Saturday's preseason win over the Cincinnati Bengals was a seven-yard touchdown scramble on third-and-goal, which marked his first touchdown as a Bear.

Former Bears quarterback Justin Fields was a great running quarterback, as well. However, the way that Williams does it is different. Fields looks like it is his only option to run a good play when he is out there. He isn't much of a duel threat. With Williams, he looks down the field while scrambling and only goes for it if it's his last resort. His whole game isn't built around running the football anymore.

That was evident on the play before Williams' seven-yard scramble, where he rolled right, eluded the defender and threw a dart, on the run, to rookie receiver Rome Odunze in the back corner of the end zone. It would've been a touchdown if Odunze didn't have his feet out of bounds. But it showed Williams' improvisation skills and how he always has his eyes downfield.

"In the red zone there, you have some things in terms of, like, being able to extend plays," coach Matt Eberflus said after the game. "Every quarterback in the league extends plays in the red zone. He does that. He's very good at it. He had a touchdown there. Obviously, I talked to Rome after the game about learning where your feet are and feeling that out. But it's been good. It's been good. But again, there's a balance there between throwing the ball on time and scrambling when you have to. He has a good balance of that."

Eberflus believes Williams can be a great threat both scrambling and throwing the ball downfield. If this is an ability that sticks with him, he will be great for a long time.

We see a lot of the great quarterbacks in the NFL, including Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, and Lamar Jackson among others, scramble but it isn't all about that as we've seen with a guy like Fields in the past.

As Eberflus mentioned, the ability to shine with this ability in the red zone will make a great difference, as well. The Bears are already demonstrating a more dangerous offense than they have in a long time. It is only the preseason, but so far Williams is doing a great job on this front.
