Are the Bears going to fire Ryan Poles? The latest on Chicago's GM

There is just one more game that separates the Chicago Bears from the offseason, and it seems as if everyone is ready to get to that point. The Bears (4-12) have lost 10 in a row and are limping to the finish line ahead of their Week 18 tilt with the playoff-bound Green Bay Packers (11-5).

It's been a tumultuous season for the Bears, who have seen multiple coaching changes over the last two months and have many big decisions coming up. One of those could be the fate of general manager Ryan Poles, who has come under fire over the last month following the firing of Eberflus.

Despite team president and CEO Kevin Warren publicly backing Poles during a December press conference, there is reason to believe the Bears general manager is on the hot seat. The team has performed worse after Eberflus was let go, and many of the players that were counted on as key building blocks haven't shown enough improvement. The two longest losing streaks in Bears history have come under his watch, and it's fair to question whether or not a new head coach would want to tie themselves to Poles.

Ryan Poles job status

As of now, Poles still remains as the Bears general manager. The team has given no indication that anything will change since the press conference that featured Poles and Warren. Poles has also discussed plans for the offseason on the Bears flagship radio station, talking about the vision he has for going forward.

What are the chances Ryan Poles is fired?

While Bears fans may be pounding the table for the team to relieve Poles of his duties, he may be safer than people think. ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter joined ESPN 1000's Waddle & Silvy Show on Monday and was asked about the GM's job status. "My expectation is Ryan Poles is going to be there," he told the show. Schefter did leave the door open for a change as surprises happen, but he believes Poles will get his shot at another head coach.

Schefter's information came hours after another NFL insider shared similar sentiments. Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer wrote in his weekly column for MMQB that Poles will run the search for the team's new head coach, which is what ownership wants. Warren will be a part of the conversations, but this is Poles' hire to make. That seems to indicate the 39-year-old general manager isn't going anywhere.

Who are some candidates to replace Ryan Poles if he's fired?

At this point, it seems Poles might be safe, but things can always change. If the Bears do decide to start over at general manager, a few top candidates could include Detroit Lions assistant general manager Ray Agnew, Kansas City Chiefs assistant general manager Mike Borgonzi, Buffalo Bills assistant general manager Brian Gaine, and Baltimore Ravens vice president of player personnel George Kokinis.

Ultimately, though, the team's general manager could be decided by who they want as head coach. The picture will start to become clear when the offseason begins and interviews can take place.
