Bears GM Ryan Poles shares biggest goal for 2024 season
The Chicago Bears are gearing up for the 2024 NFL season, where there are high expectations for what this team can accomplish. And that starts with the work that general manager Ryan Poles has done in three offseasons to put this team in a position to succeed.
Poles was asked about the team's goal for the 2024 season. And while the top goal should come as no surprise (it's the same for every team), the third-year GM focused on one specific area: Growth.
“(The goal) is always going to be to win championships, to win the division, win Super Bowls,” Poles said Wednesday at Halas Hall. “That’s always the goal. Obviously, getting into the playoffs and winning playoff games would be outstanding. But I think the biggest thing is can we take that big jump from where we were last year to this year? And I think we’re capable of doing that.”
The Bears have gone 10-24 in Poles' first two seasons with Chicago, which isn't the kind of record that typically garners praise for a GM. But the one thing that's been evident through those first two years is the Bears have grown with each passing season. While they started 3-14 in 2022 -- earning them the No. 1 pick that turned into one of the greatest trades in NFL history -- they more than doubled their win total in 2023 with a 7-10 record.
Now, Chicago has improved their roster with key additions including quarterback Caleb Williams, receivers Keenan Allen and Rome Odunze, as well as running back D'Andre Swift, safety Kevin Byard, defensive end Austin Booker and new offensive coordinator Shane Waldron and defensive coordinator Eric Washington.
When looking at this current roster, there's no reason to believe this team can't continue the upward trajectory and add to their win total -- perhaps even earning the first winning season under Poles and head coach Matt Eberflus.
